To see which version of Flash Player is installed go up to left upper hand corner of your browser (if your using Safari) and click on (System Preferences) and in there you'll see the preferences pane open up and a red icon for Flash Player. Click on that icon it opens up and tells you what version your running. It also has preferences whether you want Adobe to install the updates for you automatically or whether you want it to let you know when to install it yourself.

My Safari browser doesn't seem to work like this. My browser has a "Preferences" and not a "System Preferences". I'm running Parallels and Windows 7 on my MBP and so perhaps that makes the Safari browser appear differently. I don't see a Flash Player red icon. I do see a bunch of Quick Time Apps. I wonder if Apple has replaced Flash Player with a bunch of other apps that allow me to see YouTube, etc. I also looked in Firefox and don't see anything there showing Flash Player.

For some reason Apple doesn't want us to run the Flash Player. I suspect they have given us some equivalent add-ons or extentions to do the same thing.

No more time to play with this tonight.

Anyone able to offer some suggestions or help or explanation here?

Thanks

That's probably why, because your running Parallels and Windows 7 do it doesn't display like Safari. You might be able to view certain videos on YouTube without Flash Player because it may be using HTML5 which also allows certain videos to play but not all.

I can view some of my of the videos that I have in My Favorites without the Flash Player but if I try to view someone else's say on the home page of YouTube they won't play and display a blank black box. So yes I think it's also using HTML5.

Another thing I don't quite understand is why when they say Flash Player is not available on iOS devices like iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad do the videos play? There is a player on there called Vimeo or something to that effect.

Are you having a hard time installing it too? What are you getting the (generalized install error)?

I nearly always just run the Mac invironment and only run Windows 7 when I need to run a Windows program that isn't available in the Mac environment. But, it is possible that the Parallels Desktop modifies Safari. I'm starting to wonder if my MacBook Pro is using Flash Player at all. I suspect that Apple has other software running that takes the place of the Flash Player. I installed it, but can't find any evidence that it is running.

Yes, it was the DOC function that starting running automatically after I'd installed the Flash Player.

I have upgraded to the Maverics OSX 10.9. I was running Mountian Lion in April when I last updated Flash Player.

Wonder if someone from Apple could answer these questions about Flash Player in the Mac environment.

I am sorry you're so frustrated by all this.

And, also that you have "guit" over it. :-)

The DOCK, once forced to quit, WILL RESTART automatically, however the DASHBOARD does not automatically restart, and won't load until summoned.

Quit DOCK, but do NOT "check to see if DASHBOARD is still running," as that will restart it. Not sure if that is what you are doing.

I think that is good advice, however: "never install that stinking crappy Adobe Flash Player ever again!"

Hi, I had the same issue and did the following:

Open a Terminal, then type:

sudo killall DashboardClient

(type your password, you will not see it and the command will return nothing)

It worked like a charm!

Hope it works for you as well. It is basically the same thing that some other people do with the Activity Monitor but you don't have to hunt for the line jumping up and down ;-)

1) Make sure you have the Flash Player installer on your desk top.

2) Shut down your computer for 30 - 60 seconds to drain all the RAM

3) Restart in "Safe Mode" by holding down the shift key as soon as you hear the start-up "bong." (You can release the shift key after the progress bar appears.)

4) Once you have your computer restarted this way, install Flash Player update.

5) Restart normally. It should now be fully installed.

This worked for me on Lion!

Hope it helps everyone.
