Contacts App Crashes Every Day

I have the latest build of OS X running on MacBook Air.

Starting about 2 weeks ago, Contacts crashes every morning. By crash, I mean that it hangs, won't respond.

I leave my Mac on at the end of the day. I close the top so it goes into sleep mode.

When I open the Mac the following morning, Contacts is always in hang mode.

When I go to Misson Control, I see the app. When I click on it, I get the pinwheel.

The app always requires a Force Quit. I get the option to Report the problem which I do.

I have turned the machine off and back on. The same problem occurs the following morning.

Safari is always open as is Mail, Reminders, Messages and Calendar. None of those OS X based apps seem to crash/hang.

I also generally have Skype, Evernote and DropCopy open all the time as well.

I've had this "setup" of app usage for about a year and the problem with Contacts only started about 2 weeks or so ago as noted above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Back up all data.

Quit Contacts or Address Book if it’s running. If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane.

Triple-click the text on the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):

~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return.

A Finder window will open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.

Relaunch the application and test. If there’s no improvement, quit and put back the item you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Contacts was hung again this morning.

I did as you asked. Console reported 4000 messages. I went to the most recent Contacts/Address Book incident after Contacts was working fine yesterday (after having crashed and getting relaunched yesterday morning) and clipped the following which seems to refer to this morning's crash:

Note: These instructions are for OS X 10.8 or later. In OS X 10.7, the procedure is the same, but the application is named "Address Book" instead of "Contacts."

Back up all data.

If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane.

From the list of groups on the left side of the Contacts window, select All Contacts. From the menu bar, select

File Export Export vCard

Save the exported contacts to the Desktop, then quit Contacts.

Triple-click the text on the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):

~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return.

A Finder window will open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.

Launch Contacts. Your contacts will be gone. From the menu bar, select

File ▹ Import

and import from the file you exported above. Your contacts will reappear.

Re-enable Contacts in the iCloud preference pane, if you disabled it earlier. Test. If the issue is resolved, delete the AddressBook folder and the vCard file on the Desktop and close the open folder window.

Otherwise, quit Contacts again and put the AddressBook folder back where it was, overwriting the newer one that will have been created in its place. Post your results.

Thanks for the help. The app did not hang this morning.

I also deleted an Exchange Server account (former client that I no longer need) from the Contacts account list. And I turned off LogMeIn which seemed to have a call to it in the log right around the time that the Contacts app crashed. I'm going to turn LogMeIn back on today and see what happens tomorrow morning.

Thanks again for all of the help.

Up and running for a couple of straight days.

May I ask what caused you to believe that there was something inside of my contacts that was causing the problem? As noted in the original post, the app would run fun all day even if it were in sleep mode for long periods, but crashed in the "morning" after an overnight sleep.

Thanks again for all of the help.
