300 watt power supply for G4?

I'm sure I'm the thousandth person to buy Motion to run on my G4 "Saw tooth" AGP that discovered it won't load becuse of the video card. Eventhough I upgraded the video card (and the processor, and drives, and memory)to run FCE HD 3.0 it apprently doesn't do the trick for Motion.

After looking at the recommended video card list harder this time, I decided the ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC 256 mb card would fit my budget.

Of course, the specs on the card say it requires a 300 watt power supply or more, and of course, my internet search so far has turned up NO direct power supply replacements for the 208 watt PS that came standard in my model.

It seems a bit strange posting a hardware question on the Motion board but I thought perhaps some one out there had fought this question to the gorund before and hopefully won.

Can anyone tell me if they have either successfully upgraded the power supply (in a G4 AGP power mac - tower case) ORIf they have installed and run the 9600 mac & pc card with no problem on the 208 watt Power Supply.

I called ATI to no avail. I got to talk to a "parrot" who had absolutley no concept or technical understanding and couldn't understand to go ask his boss about it.

I do have an electronics background.

Ken - I have absolutely no idea if this would work, but if you got something like this:

it comes with a little switching supply to power a hard drive. I'm pretty sure that the pigtail for the ATI 9600 is just a legacy Molex HD y connector. Maybe you could plug the hd powersupply into it? You're the one with the electronics background...

I should also add that the ATI 9600 pro ($75 from OWC) doesn't have an additional power demand and I believe it uses the same chip, just less VRAM. I use that card in my home DPMD G4...

Patrick,

I've come full cycle after discovering the 9600 does not physically fit in my G4 AGP sawtooth because I have now learned that I have an AGP 2x slot. The 9600 is only for 4x and 8x.

So now my choices are between the 128mb card or the 256mb card.

There is of course a difference in price and I'm wondering if there is a siginificant difference in speed and is it worth the money? As you may recall, I'm putting the card in to satisfy Motion's requirements.

I'm running dual 19" Apple Studio Monitors. Does the card split the memory for each monitor?
