Cannot successfully restore iPhone 3GS. Tried .ipsw files but keep getting error message. Any suggestions?

Firmware installed, software installed. When phone was trying to reboot, it failed. Error message "unkown error occurred (-1 )

Do NOT download iOS updates from other sites than Apple.
Only risks and no advantages, same size same download speed.
We have learned that the iPhone was "flashed" after lower version of firmware failed. How can we get the phone out of recovery mode?

You can not install anything but the current version of iOS.
Attempting to do so is hacking the phone. It voids any warranty and forfeits all rights to support here or from Apple.
Put the phone in DFU mode and try to install the current version of iOS using iTunes, allowing iTunes to perform the download.
If that doesn't work, find an answer somewhere else or buy a new phone.
Can you get a Wi-Fi connection on your iPhone?
I got an Internet connection on my phone, went to SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> SOFTWARE UPDATE and updated my Software wirelessly (no iTunes involved).
When I connected my phone to my Computer again and iTunes popped up, it showed that my iPhone software was up to date. Then I could restore to an old back-up.
To update and close this issue. I took faulty iPhone to London Apple Store upon my departure from Uganda. We tried to restore twice, but failed. Fortunately, iP3GS covered by warranty! so they gave me new one. Will get it to Uganda and the happy staffer!
