After downloading new software from the web as Adobe Flash Player it leaves an icon on my desktop. DO I have to leave it there or can I put it into the trash. Will I loose the downloaded software if I do?

No, you don't. In fact, you can change the settings if you want. In Safari preferences, in the general tab, set the downloads location to wherever you want. I believe the default is the "Downloads" folder which is what I use, and it keeps the clutter off your desktop.
Once you've updated Flash, you can delete the installer.
If you've installed the software you can move the icon to the trash.
Note if the icon looks like a disk that is referring to the mounted DMG file the software was packaged in. Moving it to the trash will only unmount it and remove it from the Desktop. To delete the file you will need to locate it (usually in Downloads) and delete the file you see there.
No, you don't have to keep them? I can drag it to the trash? It is already going to "Downloads" It asks me where I want to put them. I have not idea where else to put them.
I looked under preferences and it is in the downloads. I guess I can always re download it if it disappears after dragging it to the trash.
Dragging the desk icon will unmount the DMG file as I wrote.
If you want to delete the downloaded file go to Downloads and drag the file to the trash.
