Playback of iPhoto movies not smooth

For 5 years I have taken a lot of nice avi movies with my compact Nikon S210 camera. They always play back very smoothly and are a pleasure to watch directly on my Mac, via a large attached monitor or even to my Apple TV.

But this past week my daughter purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-Z25. A super camera that records videos in either a "clip" mode or in mp4 format. Great it would seem, except that when playing back these "movies" in iPhoto (latest version, running 10.8.3 on my MacBook Pro mid-2010) they are jerky-- not smooth. Sometimes if I play the same video 5 times over, it gets better. But then I play another one, go back to that one, and it is jerky again. Same if played with QuickTime. BUT never a problem with the avi movies taken on my other camera -- only this Lumix gives the jerky playbacks. Why?

I am ready to purchase a Lumix but WILL NOT if I am going to have videos like that!

I have used Perian (Mac) for years and years. Currently version 1.2.3 which it says is the latest. How will this help in iPhoto?

HEY is that maybe the problem-- Perian is causing an issue? Maybe I should try UN-installing Perian and seeing what I get???

When I get time to do that… Just glad I discovered this issue before spending €350 on the TZ40 or another camera that may have this issue. Perhaps they all do now as they are trying to become cameras AND camcorders…

Thanks for any comments.

Thanks and I'll try removing Perian and see if that helps--- likely the same…

Here's the reply from Panasonic: Evidently they are not reading my eMails and just sending standard boilerplate replies-- they didn't even say my name, just "Dear Mr. ******"---

Thank you for your e-mail.

Regarding your enquiry, please know that the information provided is all the information we have about Mac compatibility (the latest one). As in the previous e-mail, 50p footage available on some cameras is not supported by Imovie. Apparently, this is the case. Given this situation, we kindly recommend you wait for future updates for your camera's software:

I had told them the issue was with iPhoto (it works with iMovie)-- but no, they just plugged in a standard reply-- I also told them the rate was 25 fps, but they didn't read my eMail, just hit reply with a copy-paste. Very sad.

I will end this post in a few days and repost with a specific request for anyone having choppy video playback to report.

Thanks again,

Steve
