Can I correct this so that they are once again automatically orientated correctly on import?

I'm at a loss also. Do you have another camera that offers Auto Rotate that you can try with your library to see if it's your other camera or iPhoto?

I upload to a folder on the Desktop and rotate the files that need rotating with Xee, a free app that losslessly rotates image files, before importing into iPhoto. It also gives me a chance to rename the files to something more imformative that IMG-XXX.jpg.

Earlier in our exploration, when I logged in as another user and imported some photos on to the HD from an SD card, and then imported them into iPhoto, they were from a different camera. I've transfered photos from SD cards from this camera many times before in exactly the same way without a problem. Photos from the same sources that 'pass through' Photoshop orientate correctly when imported into iPhoto and all my photos, old and new, orientate correctly in Preview. It has to be a problem with iPhoto and has arisen only since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. As I said earlier, the fact that after reinstallation iPhoto still 'knew' about the test library I created earlier and subsequently deleted showed that some components of iPhoto remained after I uninstalled it. I'm really disappointed that this problem has arisen! Thanks for all your time and help; it has been greatly appreciated.
