I have the same issue. If I download a mobi file from Dropbox the Kindle app icon doesn't appear in the "Open in" group of applications. However, if I download a PDF from Dropbox, the Kindle app icon does appear in the "Open in" group of applications.

Is there a way to set up an association of a file type to an app in iOS, similarly to what can be done in Windows or OS/X?

Resetting the device didn't change the current behavior.

Wondering if Amazon removed this capability. Is anyone still able to use the "Open in" function for mobi files?

I am reasonably confident that somehow ios 6.1.3 has changed mobi files to the rar format. That is why the kindle app does not seethe files. I sure hope that apple is aware of this. I am spoiled by windows where one can back out an update that causes problems. In the apple world that is not an option for iPads. Correct me if I am wrong. In this case I would love to be wrong so I could go back to 6.1.2.

You are correct in that Apple does not support down-grading iOS. I don't necessarily agree with the assesment of a change in iOS being the culprit. It is - as someone else has suggested - more likely an issue on amazon's end and the Kindle App itself. Ann app, such as Dropbox, cannot call upon another app in the "Open In..." function if the receiving app does not accept the file type.

Mr. Ward,

I appreciate that you chimed in. And clearly your are well regarded here.

But I have a simple question for you.

Do you use dropbox to pass mobi files using 6.1.3? If so, and you do not have this problem, I am all ears.

If not, then you most likley do not have the motivation to do all the troubleshooting that I have done to identify the likely culprit. I am an engineer by training, and have taken all appropriate steps to identify the likely culprit.

Believe it or not, it is most likely a bug in 6.1.3 that changes mobi files to rar format when imported from file sharing sites like dropbox or Microsoft Skydrive. There is no problem with 6.1.2, and the mobi files can be "sideloaded" with no probem with 6.1.3 into the Kindle app. Reinstalling various apps does not fix the problem, not does a complete system restore.
