Getting a good video from MiniDV? Is it even possible?

I purchased my first Mac because everyone told me they were superior to Windows for photo and video editing...well, that's the last time I take that advice!

I purchased Final Cut Pro X to do some video editing and save the final version to a DVD...I still have yet to get it to be of even "home movie" quality!

I am capturing video (children's theater) from Mini Dv's and basically adding a few transitions and titles and saving them to DVD.

I am not changing any settings, I am leaving the files in their native codec. It looks EXTREMELY interlaced, which I expected, but all of my research says not to deinterlace if you are saving back to DVD, since DVDs are interlaced. The DVDs look exactly like they did in FCPX, not fit for sharing with ANYONE!

What am I doing wrong??? Windows Movie doesn't have the same issue...I can't believe I wasted $2,500+ on this laptop and terrible software!

I am desperate to get this software to work...

The reason I asked was to learn whether the file had been captured to another machine (say, a PC) by other software and then brought into your Mac in a container other than Quick Time.

Usually the only issue FCP users sometimes have with tape-based files is getting them to import. Once they're in, they should work fine together. And the image quality should not be degraded at all within FCP.

However, compressing to MPEG2 sometimes produces images that are unsatisfactory – just the nature of severe compression – regardless of the software (or platform).

Most players and TVs de-interlace if needed and as a general matter, you're right in not de-interlacing. Otherwise, a lot of important detail is being thrown out prematurely.

But for whatever reason, some disks just don't play well with a given player and there is no choice but to do it before the encoding. FCP can do this, although Compressor can do it better.

I used the "capture" feature in FCPx with firewire to my camera. I have a Panasonic AG-DVX100B

When I choose capture, it brings up a screen that allows me to control my camera, I hit import and it plays the tape and records it on my computer.

Here is a screen shot of the file the capture creates. As you can see, there isn't any banding...just a little blurrUser uploaded file

from the movement in the video when I did a print screen.
