Migration Assistant on Macbook Pro with Retina Display

I just got my MacbookPro with Retina Display today. It's my first Mac. I'm using the Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my PC to the MacbookPro but it seems to be taking an awfully long time to transfer. How long should it take?

You can use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant but, if you have already made a user account on the new Mac you can not use Setup Assistant and must use Migration Assistant. The difference is that Setup Assistant does not create a new user it simply transfers the existing one, making for a cleaner installation.

If you slowed down and took note of the advice in this post it would help, but you seem determined to forge ahead, so good luck with that.

I have not made a user account. All I've done is just turn the thing on and follow the prompts. Unfortunately my dad closed the cover which interrupted the transfer and it was then frozen. Not knowing what to do, I then turned the MBP off and turned it back on. The setup process started from the beginning when I turned it back on. Right now it is still transferring my music. It says about 8 hours remaining.

I don't know what Setup Assistant is.

Setup Assistant is what will run on a new computer if you have not put a user on it, you may have as many as 3 users already, quite a mess really.

Why will I have extra users?

Migration Assistant creates a new user to transfer the old user to, Setup Assistant does not. But you can't use Setup Assistant if there is a user on the destination machine, and you have more than one user already.

Ok, I'm just letting it run. I hope it turns out ok. It's now at around 6 hours. Thanks so much.

Are you still using WiFi or did you switch connection methods?

I haven't done anything with users at all so far. I'm still using Wifi. The guy at Best Buy said just stick with the wifi and that ethernet wouldn't be much faster.
