Oh wierd! I thought all software was free.

Don't we wish all! But Adobe Lightroom 4 for your Mac is a professional application, a part of the Adobe Creative Suite, and that is not free software. You can download a free trial version however from Adobe. If you want free, high qualityy imaging software on your Mac try the free "Gimp" http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Adobe Lightroom 4 for your iPad or iPod is a free app (downloaded from the AppStore), but a very different program, and all manuals and tutorials for it are rather expensive in-app purchases.

I also downloaded LR4. It was a paid app - $79.99. I wasn't assigned a serial number which means I can't upgrade to LR5 through Adobe. I've brought the issue up with Apple and all I get is lame excuses. Adobe doesn't want to be bothered. Apparently Apple sold a copied version at a discount, but never bothered to make clear in the product description that it's basically a pirated version. Of course they did it with Adobe's consent, but that should have been made clear in the first place. I've raised **** with them about this and won't stop raising **** until they either validate my copy with Adobe so that I can get my upgrade at the upgrade price or refund my money. I'll look into any other means of keeping pressure until the issue is resolved and will try to remember to post my results here for the benefit of any and all who have experienced this problem. I may have gotten it cheaper, but that' not an excuse for their ripping me off.

Correct.

Mac app store software does not contain serial numbers since they are linked to your AppleID.

which means I can't upgrade to LR5 through Adobe.

Yes, you can.

Purchase the upgrade.

When when you run the LR5 installer it will see you have the Mac app store version and it will get a serial number from Adobe to use for LR5.

Very helpful - if there were a serial number!!!!

There will be a serial number WHEN YOU RUN THE INSTALLER!

It will get one from Adobe.

You're welcome!

I reopened LR5. The button labeled "Buy a serial number" is what confused me. You didn't understand what I didn't understand, but it looks as though the problem is solved, thanks to your persistence over my ignorance. My apologies for seeming obstinate, but the path to upgrade isn't very obvious. I've now got an upgrade in my cart for $79.00 US. All should work from here on out.

THANKS!!!!!!
