My iPad which has been working well until yesterday. All of a sudden the screen just went black. I can see the faint backlight when I press the home button. It makes the "charging noise" when it's plugged in. I know it's working and charged, it's just that the screen isn't showing anything.

Try doing a hard reset: Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't solve the issue, you could also try backing up the device and restoring the device as new.

NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.

Using his article will erase everything on the device, so make sure you have a backup!

Thanks! It fixed my iPad too. It had fallen off the bed and the screen wouldn't turn on (same thing - I could hear the sounds) - I thought it was a goner! I'm so excited!
What process did you use for this please as this is exactly what has happened to mine?
I honestly don't remember. I was so distraught and tired that once it worked I banished the memory from my brain. I restarted a lot, and plugged into my computer to update. There are other "how tos" online that I followed - I just can't remember which one worked.
