Are you sure that you lost all sound... Even in the Music app? If you lost all sound, try rebooting the iPad.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

If you have sound in the music app, system sounds are probably muted.

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

The sound has always been faint on my iPad3 but I put this down as a characteristic, then after I upgraded to iOS7 the sound was distorted ( as I do not listen to music on the tablet this was not a major problem ) but then suddenly yesterday the sound failed completely.

I tried all the tips posted, rebooting etc., etc., but all was silent.

Today in desperation I took your advice and switched the language setting to another then back to English and improbable as it seems , it worked!

The sound has returned with an increased volume, the distortion is still there though!

Thank you.

P.S. Top tip. If you are changing the language setting don't change it to Chinese, Japanese or any non roman script or you may not find your way back!!!!!LOL.

Update on yesterday's post.

Turned off iPad in evening and put on charge overnight. Next morning turned iPad on, NO SOUND!!!! Again, not a cheep.

Rebooted by holding down Home button and On-Off button until Apple logo appeared.

Bingo! Sound again with the increased volume and no distortion.

We'll see what happens the next time I switch on and off!

About time Apple sorted it out.

Had the same problem and found the mute selection set to mute on the control pad. I must have swiped up and touched the mute button accidentally. Mute never shows up in the settings sound menu. I had even tried restarting the ipad but this didn't work. Music always played but youtube videos had no sound. Once I turned off the mute button in control button, sound was restored to normal.

I had the same problem on my iPad, it would make sounds when face time was ringing but apps and music were completely dead. I tried the reset setting but had no luck then found this post http://iphonenosound.com/sound-and-speaker-has-stopped-working-on-ipad/ pretty strange but it says to clean the docking station. There was heaps of dirt in there so must of had something to do with it, hope this helps!

I had the same problem where I could hear no sound from headphones or speakers on my new iPad 2.

I actually took my iPad in to an Apple store and it was replaced under warranty at the Genius Bar. However, after restoring from an iCloud backup the sound was still not working.

The solution ended up being very simple:

1) Open Settings

2) Select "General"

3) Select "Accessibility"

4) Toggle "Mono Audio" under "Hearing" on and off. Immediately sound was restored.

Hope this works for someone else!

Old thread new symptom...

I have had the iPad lost sound syndrome several times, no sound at all unless headphones plugged in or docked, no sound at all, volume control missing all sorts.

Recently it happened again only this time I remembered the sequence of events leading up to it.

Our friends at King and Candy Crush were to blame, after a recent app refresh I turned off both music and sound effects in the Candy Crush App so as not to annoy anyone... It killed the sound, volume controls and audio in everything, video, music, you tube,

As soon as I re-enabled effects and music in Candy Crush all sound functions were back in all other Apps!

So for me at least, check all apps make sure none are set to mute effects or music as one bad app can break it for all of them!
