AppleTalk printing with Graphite AirPort Base Station doesn't work

I find this hard to believe, yet it appears to be true…

My new MacBook (black) works just fine with my old Graphite AirPort Base Station when it comes to connecting to the Internet.

But the MacBook is simply unable to "see" the AppleTalk printers that I have connected to the Graphite ABS via Ethernet. Even with AppleTalk enabled on the AirPort connection on the MacBook, the MacBook simply cannot see the printers. My other (PowerPC) Macs can see and use the printers just fine, of course.

I phoned AppleCare about this and they tell me that my Graphite BS is no longer supported, so they can't help me.

I can't believe this. The BS is working just fine… It's just a decision made by Apple not to support AppleTalk printing via the Graphite BS on Intel Macs that is now forcing me to buy a new AirPort BS.

Grrr.

I'm curious as to whether anyone has been able to wirelessly print to an Appletalk printer using any type of base station that supports Appletalk. Like many others, I cannot print wirelessly to my Appletalk printers via my Airport but can print via hardwired ethernet with no problem. A friend of mine let me try my Macbook on his Linksys BEFW11S4 and I get the exact same results i.e. no wireless printing but wired works fine. This appears to be a Macbook (not Macbook Pro) specific problem and it would sure be nice of Apple to solve it.

Yes, a MacBook can print to an AppleTalk printer over Airport Extreme and Express base stations, and I am using a Netgear WGR614 wireless G router which works with MacBook, iBook and PowerBook to my LaserWriter. So far, no one has gotten a graphite or snow ABS to work with a MacBook for AppleTalk. TC/IP works OK.

I replaced my graphite base station with the Netgear which was on sale at Fry's for $20, and it works like a champ.

Add me to the list. Its been nearly six months since anyone posted to this thread, but I thought I would add my name. I recently got a Macbook intel. I have a laserwriter 360 connected to asantetalk and asantetalke connected to a graphite airport base station. Printing has worked great for years, but the Macbook can't find the printer. Connecting the printer via asantetalk and via ethernet cable, I can print just fine. I also have a wireless netgear router but have never used it for printing. I set up the parallel network instead.

The Macbook also cannot read the airport base station settings and so I cannot reconfigure them from the Macbook.

Has there been any solution to this problem in the last six months?
