HD is corrupt; Recovery HD not found

I am trying to resolve an issue on my Macbook Pro. Using Disc Utilities, I need to boot from the Recovery HD. I did so, then restarted the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and "R" keys until the computer starts up. However, when I do, no Recovery HD appears.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

All of that is well and good but if there is a Recovery HD partition on a Mac it can be accessed by Command+r.

If you can't then there is something wrong with your system or the keyboard you are using. If all else fails, the Command+r combo, then it can still be accessed by using the Option/Alt key at start up. If you still can access it then there is something wrong with the Recovery HD partition. It is not bootable or it is corrupted. No matter what diskutil list says.
