Early 2009 24" iMac CONTINUALLY crashes...

The system freezes and/or restarts at least once a day as well (usually more like 3-10x), seems to be worst in Safari, but also happens on waking from sleep and anything that is graphic-related (I almost typed graphic-heavy, but even small graphic files/sites/apps that have previously not posed any problem suddenly are), or now also video--whether it is flash/html5 viewed directly online or video files played from the hard drive. Any ONE of these things is enough to either slow the system to a crawl (like a 2-page InDesign document or loading FaceBook timeline--small things that should not be problem weighing the system down) or causing automatic restart or system-wide freeze for which the only solution is to hold the power button and do a hard reboot.

While there were issues before installing Mountain Lion (a clean install, btw, specifically to try to eradicate this problem), it seems no better and progressively worse since the upgrade.

Besides the clean install, here's what I've tried:
-MacKeeper clean

-PRAM reset

-freeing up hard disk space (there is 275GB free on a 640 drive)

-reboot in safe mode

-shut down and unplug all peripherals and power, reboot

-using fewer programs (I work in graphic design, so I almost ALWAYS need Safari, Mail, InDesign, and usually Photoshop open. A lot, I know, but they aren't large files, and it's an almighty MAC after all, it should be fine--and forget about iTunes or iPhoto, opening them almost always causes a crash too... so no music while I work, at least not from iTunes)

Apple care ran out on this machine nearly a year ago, but really, these things should be more robust than a 4-year use-life...

I am not a computer tech, nor do I have the time or interest to pick apart panic logs to figure out what it all means. I just want it to work. Wasn't that Apple's motto for a while, "It just works"? Hmmm... not right. I should not have to either learn how to be a Genius or haul my 24" iMac to the nearest retail store AND pay for the repairs (if any) on a machine that is only 3.5 years old. That's ridiculous. That can't be my only 2 choices.

Anyway, here are 2 of the crash logs, one from today, and one from a couple days ago:

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can pick them apart and find the possible cause(s)

Your iMac is still crashing?

What else was running besides Mail and Safari?

Were you trying to access something on Safari?

Just so we all can be sure that your iMac isn't overheating and freezing.

Search for, download and install iStat Pro and then report back with the temps it records.

Also, I 'll ask, when was the last time you cleared out/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports?

You have to power down your iMac, disconnect everything and unplug your iMac.

Lay your iMac screen down on a heavy soft towel or blanket.

Use either a small electronics vacuum or a standard vacuum with hose and crevice tool attachment and slowly and carefully vacuum out all of the various vents, slots and ports around your iMac.

Then, reconnect everything, startup your iMac. Use iStat Pro temperature monitor and report your iMac's new temperatures here.

Apr 24, 2013 4:34 PM in response to MichelPM

Hmmm... this could very well be a factor! It is warm to touch (though I don't know what the normal range would be... it does seem warmer than it *should* be)

*going to do this now*

I see it's a dashboard widget: I should note that I have only about 5 widgets currently, as whenever I switch to dashboard, it's i n c r e d i b l y s l o w ! I know that the widgets are web based and are attempting to get online, but shouldn't they already be? I dunno, I don't use dashboard that much...

I'll post the result in a few!

Apr 24, 2013 6:01 PM in response to MBD999

These temps are in Celsius.

I think some of these are on the high side.

Others may disagree, but 62 and 59 degrees Celsius is on the high side for the GPU.

I feel the HD temps are a little warmer, too!

The CPU temps isn't bad, but would like to see a little lower, too!

Maybe you should do as I suggested to clear out all of the dust, lint and dirt from all of your iMac's venting, slots and ports.

Then reconnect everything, power up your iMac, do some tasks and report back the temps after the cleaning.

Apr 24, 2013 6:07 PM in response to MichelPM

I did, those are the temps after cleaning--granted, it was not off for long to cool down...

As of now, HD is 56, CPU is 48-51 (2 checks, 2 numbers). I'm only running Safari and Mail right now, but I really need to get some work done in Adobe! Deadlines!

I also used to let it just sleep all the time without shutting down, but lately I've been shutting down overnight--hopefully that'll help temps too.

Apr 24, 2013 6:33 PM in response to MichelPM

no, not yet, although some of the precursors to crashes have already started--screen flashing, slowneess, double-cursor, it's weird cuz there's a whole host of telltale signs, but they have changed...

I'll try to check temps while in Adobe and/or when it's slowing up and quit programs to get it to cool down a bit, and I'll try to see if there's any correlation between the heat and the crashes.

Aside from vaccuuming out the vents and ports, and getting more RAM (so the HD doesn't have to work so hard), what can I do to lower the temps?

Apr 24, 2013 7:14 PM in response to MBD999

What I have done is install a simple manual software internal fans control application.

I use SMC Fan Control. It's a simple app that is not complicated to use.

If you decide to install and try this, my recommendation is not to ramp up the fans up past 1600 RPMs or so.

I have my Mac set around the 1400-1500 RPM range.

Also, I run a small (6 inch diameter) desktop fan blowing on the back of the iMac's aluminum enclosure blowing toward on the middle to upper half of the back of the aluminum enclosure.

Good Luck!

Apr 25, 2013 1:07 PM in response to MichelPM

Well, it's still crashing, and JUST with Safari running.

I moved the kexts you highlighted way back into a desktop folder so that they wouldn't run anymore, restarted, and of course the displaylink driver made my third screendisappear. It's OK, I knew that would happen, but I found actually 3 drivers (I remember I had actually installed the one on the CD that came with the hardware, which was out of date, a second one from their site, which was also out of date, and finally found the right one on their mac downloads page...) so I figured I might as well remove all 3 drivers and reinstall ONLY the right one.

It froze up pretty quickly, in a new way, with my main screen and my minidisplay screen split into a large grid of black squares, white sqaures, and some regular desktop squares. Ironically, the displaylink screen showed a regular display. Normally I'd have done a hard reboot, but since it was bedtime anyway, I decided to leave it so that it would (eventually) reboot on its own I could get the crash report.

I also just checked disk utility, and my HD is fine, but the permissions found a couple things. One was in iTunes, which I remember coming up on previous permissions repairs... it says it repairs it when I click "repair", but when I run it again, it comes up again!

And the other:

SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired

Has also come up before.

Here's the crash report from last night as well:

To try to get to the bottom of the kernel panics, is it feasible for you to completely uninstall the DisplayLinkDriver and run with just the Mac and no additional screens for a day or so to see if the crashes stop.

I was looking at the DisplayLink site and they put a lot of emphasis on 10.8.3 being installed before the driver is added: http://www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php

I'm wondering if you completely deleted it and the crashes disappeared whether then re-installing a fresh copy of the OS followed by the DisplayLink Driver would work. Just throwing out ideas here.

Apr 25, 2013 1:51 PM in response to Paul_31

Ya, anything's worth a try, but I've only had the displaylink device (and driver) for 2 weeks--the crashes had been happening (as frequently) for months before I acquired the third screen. I'm not sure what version of Snow Lepard I had when I initially installed the drivers, but as of the last driver install, I am running 10.8.3.

I had actually stopped using my iMac for a while because of the crashes last fall, working only on my Air, but my workflow has changed for a bigger project and I pretty much need the bigger screen (not just he additional ones, the main one too), so I went back to it a couple months ago. It was really snappy after a 5 month holiday, but after a couple weeks the freezes and crashes happened. THEN I installed Snow Leopard (clean install, hoping it'd help), THEN acquired the 3rd screen (cintiq tablet). The crashes don't seem much more frequent now than then, although the symptoms have changed.

But... I'll try without it, just to be thorough. 🙂

I appreciate everyone's help, and I'm not trying to be difficult, just giving accurate info to pin down the problem!

Update:

So, no crash yet, per se, but I had to restart it anyway because of some weird graphics that made it impossible to use. It starts with the upper 3/4 of the screen flashing as if trying to refresh, then repeated and offset overlays of screen segments, and then a kind of sparkly pixelation (pics of the sparkly pixelation below). This is closer to the symptoms I was experiencing previously (before displaylink).

And this is all AFTER removing displayink hardware and drivers, runing ony Safari.

Could it be my internal graphics card that's baked and causing all this?

This is definitely a graphic "chip" (GPU) issue.

I noted that the GPU temps were rather high.

This could be the cause of your iMac freezing or crashing.

The GPU maybe overheating.

Have you tried the fans control software to ramp the fans up to decrease the internal temps?

This may ( or not at this point) clear up the graphics problem.
