1st Gen Airport Express > Ethernet > Wifi

Bascailly, what I want to do is to connect my 1st gen airport express to my exisiting airport extreme / time capsule network and then for me to connect my laptop via ethernt, to the 1st gen airport express allowing me to access this network / internet.

Is this possilbe. I've been able to connect the airport to the network via extending, joining the exsisting network but everytime this happens, it seems, the ethenet connection turn's off.

Help !!

The Ethernet port is enabled when the 1st Gen AirPor Express "extends" a wireless network.

So, the first thing to check is to make sure that you really do have a 1st Gen AirPort Express.

Look for the Model No on the side of the Express. The 1st Gen Model No is A1264.

If you see A1084 or A1088 there, this is not a 1st Gen model, and it does not have the capability that you need.

Hi Bob.

Thanks for clarifying this.

I currently have a 1st gen airport express extending my network. Wirelessly works perfectly, however when I connect my pc to via ethernet, it simply says unidentified network, and nothing I do can resolve this. I've tried both using dhcp and manually assigning ip address to no avail.

I've tried connecting my 2008 macbook pro via cable, and while it says connected, it only has a self assigned IP so internet access doesnt work. Again manually assigning IP doesnt work either

Any suggestions?

Yeah I'm pretty certain that its extending the network because I now have full wifi where I previously had none. I have tried 2 different cables so I'm starting to think that the ethernet port is faulty. My next test will be to swap out my 2nd gen express with the 1st gen one by the adsl and see if it will share my adsl going in via ethernet over wifi, as this is how it was setup way back when, before I got the 2nd gen

Yup, it would seem the ethernet port is faulty, along with the whole device because it would barely setup as a new wireless network. 1 min its there, the next its not, but at no point would it share my internet connection when connected directly to the modem. I have now gone back to my previous setup of 2nd gen connected to modem, with 1st gen extending the 2nd gens network. While this is up and working, I will keep an eye on it to see if it continues to stay up as an extender.

All very odd.
