Frozen macbook pro, late 2011 model, rebooting to a blank white screen

Hi

I am using a macbook pro, late 2011 model. I bought in January 2012, have been using it all the while until yesterday 26th April 2013 with no problems at all. However, as i was watching a movie, the screen froze, with a weird red checkerboard pattern all over. When i tried rebooting it, it was fine at first, but then the horizontal lines appeared across the screen, and the computer froze. Then i had to reboot multiple times as i kept getting a blank white screen.

I am really unsure of what went wrong, so i searched for apple software updates, and there was a java update available, so i installed that and turned the laptop off. When i turned it on again, i watched youtube a couple of minutes, and when i tried to open a video, the screen froze with black horizontal lines again, and it refused to boot - just stuck at the white screen after the on chime. Does anyone know what happened to it? I really don't want to spend thousands on repair cost after all the laptop is still very new.

Wanted to report the same issues with my 17 inch MacBook Pro late 2011. My first gut reaction when symptoms started to happen is a graphics card problem. Since my MacBook is under warrenty, I would take my problem to the nearest Apple store. I watched as my tech plug into the Apple diagnostic program...my computer checked out with a clean bill of health. The conclusion at the end of my appointment was my house's electrial system is causing the issue. Need to get a good surge protector.

I did as I was told. Same problem. Need to get straight answers as to how to fix this issue. Not the old...your just a non knowing consumer that complains alot. After all these comuters from Apple are not inexpensive.

Best,

UPDATE: When I took my Mac to get checked out by an authorized repair service, their diagnostic checks failed to show any issues, and since they could not actually recreate the problem they weren't able to help me.

So, for the next 2 months I took screen shots, photos and videos of the problem and took my computer back to the repair shop. Once again, their diagnostic checks failed to show any problems. But this time -- just by coincidence -- the problems reoccured while the repair guys were watching it.

They replaced the logic board, and the problem was solved -- a week before my warranty ran out.

My biggest disappointment is that, even though there is clearly a problem (see all the posts in this thread), it was only through pure luck that I managed to get it taken care of. The malfunction was severe but unpredictable -- it might happen 5 times over the course of a few hours and then not happen again for a week. If it had not just happened reoccur while the repair guys were watching, chances are the warranty would have run out, and I would have had to buy a new machine or else had my old one repaired at great expense.

same here, it's a late 2011 15" MBP, got it early 2012 - in the last week my screen went all funny numerous times - first it just froze in a twitch, then it started doing the all-white-at-reboot routine, then it crashed as I was emptying the trash can, then it froze in a pixelated blue mode, and so on. also, the cooler is very loud, and I hadn't that before, even though my MBP is in a protective case.

thankfully I got mine through uni so it's still covered by warranty, but I'm worried that they won't detect the fault - which I suspect is with the graphics card - when I send it away for a check up, as nearly happened to RMW.

In fact I had the OS reinstalled remotely about a year ago, as the screen was just getting all blank, ie white, which helped, until now. If this is indeed a graphics card problem, then I don't see why they shouldn't replace it, especially since this is a "known issue", as jordanfromgainesville found out.

I think this will finally make me go out on Amazon - instead of paying rip-off prices @apple shop - and at least double my ram to 8.

the 'support' offered by our corporate overlords in this thread is overwhelming. not!

Having the same issue for a month or so now and it's really irritating. I have the 13" MBP. It will definitely be the last Mac computer that I purchase. I spent more money on my first mac because I heard they are reliable, and they are anything but that. I don't have an apple store near me but after reading how much it would cost to repair I'm not going to waste my time. I'll be looking to buy a Dell again. Shame on apple for not addressing this issue and offering free repair for a known defect.

Really a shame that apple doesn't admit their fault!

I have the same problem with macbook pro august 2011.

had to replace the logicboard already 3 times now - but this is no solution - same thing will happen again because the GPU is the problem!

please post all on apples feedback site because they obviously don't read these discussions here

or they are just not caring... Steve Jobs would turn around in his grave

I have (more like HAD) The last 17" 2011 model

In EU you just can't extend or even have/own AppleCare - you have 2 years after that you can shove it.

Now dealer tells - you can buy new one or change the GPU chip for 400 EUR (approx $530) or with logicboard 600 EUR (approx $790) - seriously?

Got the same symptoms (gray screen on start-up and booting from recovery, blue/black stripes on safe-mode).

In early stage managed one time to make clean instal - result is the same.

Now it is bricked - how can I even get hardware code from it or GPU card number?

I got the MBP case with standard serial numbers.

This really ***** - nobody buys 17" macbook pro for web browsing for god sakes.
