Frozen macbook pro, late 2011 model, rebooting to a blank white screen

Hi

I am using a macbook pro, late 2011 model. I bought in January 2012, have been using it all the while until yesterday 26th April 2013 with no problems at all. However, as i was watching a movie, the screen froze, with a weird red checkerboard pattern all over. When i tried rebooting it, it was fine at first, but then the horizontal lines appeared across the screen, and the computer froze. Then i had to reboot multiple times as i kept getting a blank white screen.

I am really unsure of what went wrong, so i searched for apple software updates, and there was a java update available, so i installed that and turned the laptop off. When i turned it on again, i watched youtube a couple of minutes, and when i tried to open a video, the screen froze with black horizontal lines again, and it refused to boot - just stuck at the white screen after the on chime. Does anyone know what happened to it? I really don't want to spend thousands on repair cost after all the laptop is still very new.

You have a MacBook pro late 2011, the reason for the issues is because of a AMD Radeon 6750 discrete graphics card, thousands of people are having the same exact problem as you, yet Apple hasn't agreed to properly fixing it, I have a 15" MacBook pro late 2011, having overheating issues because of the card, get as many people as you can, spread the word so apple can recall the MacBooks and fix them, here's the link- https://www.change.org/p/timothy-d-cook-replace-or-fix-all-2011-macbook-pro-with -graphics-failure

More than 30,000 people have already signed this. If you have anymore questions, feel free to email me.

I almost forgot to say, download this to fix your issue temporarily- http://gfx.io/

Once downloaded, go to the top and click on the i and put to integrated only, this will fix your issue for the time being, but remember to sign the petition And get as many people as possible, we need apple to fix our MacBooks.

My Macbook Pro 15 Late 2011 just got this exactly problem out of nowhere a week ago. Until yesterday at least I could still reboot and reset the RAM and would be able to use for web browsing and basic tasks. Last night as soon as I started watching a movie, screen turned off on its own and went white with no apple logo. Tried everything from command R to Apple Hardware Test to Safe Mode and still cant get pass the white screen. Holding the option button at boot up gave me blue screen with black vertical lines. Very Frustrated!

Hi Guys

I have the late 2011 Macbook pro, had the exact same issues as you guys.

Start chime and logo that loads halfway and then goes to the white screen.

also had fine blue line running across the screen, definitely a graphics issue.

I found this tut on youtube by a guy named Nahush.

One you follow the instructions in the video, your machine will be able to boot properly but will probably lag, because the proper graphics drivers wont be used.

Then back up you machine, and then reinstall the os, not necessarily clean install just a re-install.

Thats what I did yesterday and the problems been fixed. Im at work, machine running better than ever.

Well I think it still happen. My macbook pro late 2011 is on the same case. I was making a work and then rebooted from nothing. When I tried to enter again on my user, it just appear the exact white screen. And nothing else works for it. I tried every kind of solution, and nothing helps.
The only thing I have is to send it to a Authorized Reseller if it still on :S

Same deal here. Late 2011 MBP 15" has been running slow for some time but recently I'd find it closed, after having been put to sleep hours earlier, with the fans running very loudly. When I'd open the lid, the laptop wouldn't wake up. I'd have to manually power down and power back up. I decided that I needed to do a fresh install of Yosemite since this machine had gone through several upgrades since Lion. I successfully reinstalled the OS yesterday, or so I thought (September 2015) and left it overnight to complete the final "Setting up your mac" stage.

In the morning it was still stuck on that screen so I had to power down and restart. The machine started to boot then got stuck on a white screen and never fully loaded. Somehow I was able to get into my desktop after a PRAM reset and began reinstalling apps during work. At the end of the day, all seemed fine so I powered down and went home. When I got home, I couldn't boot again. White screen would freeze and the machine would occasionally get stuck in a boot loop. Eventually I started to notice greenish horizontal lines across the screen and some graphical errors. Everything pointed to the logic board and the very well documented recall issue. i took the Macbook pro into the genius bar on the Upper West side in NYC this morning and a very quick diagnostic check confirmed a graphics failure.

While my macbook is well out of warranty they let me know that this was a well documented Apple issue and would be repaired at no cost. Apple also warrants the entire computer for 90 days after the repair. Hope this helps others who find themselves in a similar situation...because there seems to be more and more of us these days.
