apple mail can't connect to email account att and yahoo

On my iMac OSX 10.8.3, I am continually getting messages that two of my email accounts won't connect. My .mac account is fine, but my att accounts are continually pulling up a message "Mail Can't Connect to the account xxxx@prodigy.net (a yahoo/att domain). It asks for my password time after time, even though the correct passwords are in the settings!! This just startted happening a couple of months ago. What can I do?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Go to your Yahoo Mail in your Browser.

Make sure you are on the "In Box" tab

In the top right there should be something saying "Hi yourname" and next to that a "cog"

Hover over the cog

scroll down to "Mail Options"

On the left hand side you'll see options, click on "POP and Forwarding"

Check the box next to "Access Yahoo! Mail via POP"

or if you want your e-mail sent to another e-mail address you can enter it below.

I have had the same frustrating problem with my att/yahoo email that everyone else on this thread has had. Gmail and Earthlink accounts: no problem. att: problems since I changed my password. ATT&T folks absolutely no help at all. So I came to this forum and tried every solution suggested here, but none worked, some because I don't have the same subheads in the Preferences. But I DID notice that the space for my att.net password was blank. So I put in my new password, saved, quit Mail, reopened Mail, clicked on Get Mail, and all my att mail came into my Inbox.

Now I'm not saying this will help everyone with this problem. And I'm not saying that the solution that worked for me will continue to function normally. What I AM saying is give it a try. It just might work.

Fine business! Let's see how long it lasts. I have oftern made adjustments to my email prefrences and the mail would work for a time and then stop again. Part of the problem is ATT has been fiddeling with their email software setup. They bought a lot of smaller comanies like SBC and have to incorprate their addresses into their system.

I feel another part of the problem is there is a bug in the macmail setup. I have a mac address, a Gmail address, three SBC addresses, a ATT address, and two comcast addresses. I'm not sure that macmail can keep up with all that.

I have had this same problem for years, connecting with my hotmail and msn accounts that I have the same password for. I had it both with my old MacBook Pro and the new one I've had only since February.. Weird thing was the problem would come and go. Usually I could get it to connect by rebooting, or just give up for a while and time would go by and it would seem to fix itself. Tonight no luck. I noticed I could receive but not send. Then I read Paddster's comment above and although it was a little different situation it prompted me to go to the Keychain Access and find out what passwords it had. Sure enough the one that starts pop...... which is for receiving emails was correct for both accounts and there were only TWO that started with that address, one for hotmail.com and one for msn.com but I had FOUR identical smtp..... adresses. The first two were for old passwords I'd had long ago and changed and the second two did have the correct password. I probably could have just deleted the first two, but I decided just to change them all to the correct password, and problem solved. I can receive AND send and it doesn't inanely ask me every 2 seconds to re-enter my password. I guess somewhere along the way when I changed my msn and hotmail passwords I only told the Mac about the pop....side and failed to change the smtp side of things. When the computer sent the password to hotmail and msn it evidently just randomly selected one out of the four, and if it was the right one I saw no problem, but if picked the wrong one I got the annoying box asking for the password again and again.

AT&T U-Verse (uverse), as of July 2014, requires that you verify your non-AT&T mail accounts before they allow you to send outgoing non-AT&T mail.

Here's how to verify your non-AT&T mail accounts and link them to your AT&T U-verse account

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4987109?answerId=22291865022#22291865022

Log into your AT&T U-verse webmail att.net email account (e.g. Yahoo mail)

> click the gear at upper right of screen next to your name

Navigate to Settings > Accounts > Add

Add your non-AT&T mail accounts/ Enter info they require

U-verse will send a verification email to those mail accounts.

After you reply and verify your identity, you will be able to send outgoing email for those accounts via Mail, so long

as you have Mail configured.

Adding to this conversation. If you upgrade to UVerse from ATT DSL, you have to register for a new account for viewing the online billing. When you register the new passcode for this, it CHANGES your original ATT/Yahoo passcode to match.

I found that out when trying to view my new UVerse bill on line. After my registration, suddenly my email account no longer worked. After reading everything here and information on line, I tried to login to Yahoo mail directly. When that didn't accept my original passcode, I knew something was up. I decided to try the UVerse passcode and it worked.

When the email finally downloaded, go figure, there was an email telling me that the update would change my access to my ATT email. Yeah, so if it affected it and I couldn't SEE the email, because I couldn't login...how am I supposed to know that????

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.
