Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Why is Safari 5.1.9 a Step Back?

I resisted updating from 5.0.5 to 5.1 as right from the start it was horrible, (which is why I soon thereafter "downgraded" to 5.0.5), but then decided to finally do so, as it's already been "updated" numerous times since then, and I (wrongly) assumed many of the bugs had been fixed.
Why:

1. Does Safari Web Content constantly run up RAM usaage so very much, causing it to periodically restart, causing all my open windows & tabs to refresh, not only stopping all forward progress, while I must wait for all this to occur, but triggering any videos that may be on any of the tabs, causing me to search them out to turn them off? This is aggravating, time consuming, and when it doesn't restart on its own, I must manually force quit it, as it grows so huge (as much as 4 or more GBs) everything is slowed down and becomes unworkable.

2. Why can't we select Safari to open on a page of our choosing, such as our Homepage, as it had all the years previously? This makes zero sense, either a blank page or all the previously one, why not one of our choosing???

3. And I cannot believe users are OK with the ridiculous, time-consuming, funky, wrong-headed, backwards manner in which "Autofill" (an oxymoron) now functions! Why has this not been fixed??? It used to work so well, actually autofilling forms, making sense, saving time & extra typing, completely the opposite of the way it "functions" today......

Hi Bee, thanks for the comment, I like IMHO

Yes that is a tricky one, I could write a little runtime script that people can have that deletes only that file and doesn't empty the bin so they can check its there and nothing else, before they manually empty it.

Do you think that would do it?

Problem is unless you don't get rid of it and have it reinstalled by the Safari install, them Safari stays broken.

I read your post, watched the video, and attempted, a few times to ask you questions on your own site, but every time I tried to post it, the page only refreshed, with none of my comments showing up. Then when I tried to see your response here, I kept getting an "Unauthorized" window, saying I couldn't view this thread! Now is the first time in two days I was able to log in, and access this thread. I don't know what was going, on, but it did make me far too suspicious to try your approach.

I also don't understand why eliminating that one file, only to reinstall Safari would fix all that is wrong. Won't Safari just create a new file, that will end up acting up the same way? Why would it behave any differently?

There seem to be different objections to Safari 5.1.9 being addressed here; the main concerns voiced so far are:

(1) the extremely heavy load put on the processor by the Safari Web Content app;

(2) the extremely unfriendly way that Safari often overwrites an apparently randomly selected existing tab (and often one in an existing minimized window) when one double-clicks a link in another app such as Mail, instead of opening a new window to open the new URL

(3) The change in the options for what content should be displayed in a new tab or window.

The "fix" described above by Mr Fixed1t (which is nothing more than a long-winded reinstall) seems to address a problem he had, but none of the problems others are complaining about. It certainly does nothing to address my main gripe, and that of 'old school macuser', which is (2) above. Nor, as far as I have discovered, does it address (1) either. And certainly not (3), which appears to be a change in the design of the app from earlier versions.

Anyway, I can't see how reinstalling the same software can fix a problem caused by the design of the app, or a bug in the app, whichever it may be. Is he suggesting that his copy of Safari 5.1.9 was corrupted and therefore needed reinstalling? Or is he suggesting that when Safari 5.1.9 was originally installed on his machine, an old version of the system framework he deleted (dangerously, I may say) was left in place, and the reinstall also installed the correct version of that framework? Does he know what he is doing, and the reason why this appeared to work for him?

Sorry, but without an explanation, I can't accept it. Waving one's hands and making incantations like "delete" and "reinstall" with no reason is not the way to solve a Mac OS X problem.

By the way, I didn't like the music, and I didn't appreciate the use of these forums for the purpose of advertisement. Especially when I, like others, found I was no longer "authorized" to access this thread because of it.

Hi Saxman,

I posted last night but received a rejected message a short while afterwards and when I went back to edit the post it had gone. The problem was I did the testing for real and reported it from my software blog, which was a mistake I got slapped down for advertising...

So I created a new blog and posted. The reason the file makes such a difference is that Google Chrome shares the file with Safari and a few other bits, being a programmer and electro-musician I often have several browsers open and having chrome and Safari can cause this problem. It started a few upgrades ago.

By deleting it and emptying the wastebasket you kill it dead, if you don't empty the waste basket on anything system, osX knows where it is and just links to it... hmm annoying.

Once deleted a osx friendly Safari is installed which ads the file back and fixes the problem, chrome seems un affected and unbothered, but I did just have to reinstall and old firefox as it didn't like the updated flash, but now that too works great.

I hope this explains things.

Sorry you didn't like the fix or the video or the music.

The video I did for my youtube and usually add my own music (rather than rip off others) as background just so i don't hear the breathing and background computer noise.

I won't bother again.

Hope somebody fixes your problem or at least doesn't get shot down for trying.

Have a nice life.

Please try not to take these comments personally. I know how it feels to put yourself out there, and seemingly slapped down for the effort.

I thought it was great that you took all the trouble to upload your video to YouTube. I would really strongly recommend that you make it clearer how tricky that particular folder can be, and for folks to be really really careful.

FixedIt, can you explain why this fixes the issues in Safari? And were you having the same issues as Mike mentioned, and are those not now happening? I too, am trying to understand why deleting a file that the new Safari will replace once installed, changes everything. I don't want to venture into deleting system files without my eyes open. Thanks..

Bee, I didn't make an "automatic assumption", just expressed my being weirded out at suddenly being "unauthorized" to access a thread I had started, AND, when I was at fixedIt's own blog, being unable to post any comments/questions, so it was not just some Apple Discussion board issue. To have both those things occur made me suspicious, especially when he was saying to mess with files in my System folder. So I asked him to further explain his fix, not accusing him of anything...
