Why won't the Magic Mouse track on granite countertops?

All of sudden, after five days no problem, my brand new Magic Mouse decided to stop tracking on granite!

I REFUSE to get a mouse pad. And yes, the batteries are brand new!

Please advise!

I have a p.o.s. $15 mouse from my local science museum that works perfectly on my granite counter, but Apple's $70 mouse doesn't work for me either.
