DeeCusta,
I ended up having to send my Mid-2009 Unibody 17" MacBook Pro back to the manufacturer to have the logic board replaced.
Ultimately it was a long chain of unfortunate events, starting with my HDD. Apparently even thought it seemingly worked fine for a few years, it was slowly racking up read/write errors, causing the processor to get bogged down. Then video performance began to suffer. Then my fan started running constantly, and the case was extremely hot to the touch. Also, I left the battery charging too long, too often, and killed that too. It's important to note that I was using a 3rd-party external monitor most of the time, which is apparently linked to kernel panics (due to the resolution settings confusing the computer and it freaking out).
All-in-all the kernel panic is what shuts down your Macbook sporadically, and can be linked to tons of different things. After a bunch of kernel panics over a month or two, it seems that everything led back to the brain and fried the logic board.
So, long story short, bring your computer to the Apple store (I know, I know) and have them run a hardware diagnosis on it. They will find it's not repairable in-store and will mail it out for a new board.
Hope this helps.
