MacBook Pro won't respond to power button

Earlier today when I was reading Lifehacker, my MBP just shut down. I also noticed that my power cord also doesn't work. When it shut off it was at 99% full.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 2.9 GHz Intel core i7, 8GB RAM

DeeCusta,

Even if your battery is damaged (i.e. not holding a charge) shouldn't it still work if plugged into MagSafe? Unless it's so damaged it can't even do that anymore.

Also, I scoured the internet for a long, long time to no avail when trying to find another solution besides bring the computer back to the Apple store. It doesn't seem there's any kind of hardware boot you can do without the power button, I don't think.

Hi igeek123,

Would you be able to check if your laptop boots with another charger, perhaps a friend's? Did the charger suddenly stop working with the failure of the laptop or did you just notice that later? (that is, how long has the charger not been working and is it relevant to the laptop's failure?)

When you say it "won't respond" to tapping the power button, does that mean nothing at all happens when you press it? No lights, just completely unresponsive? Let me know and all the best.

I have this issue too. Last night I was doing a fresh install of Mavericks on my friend's MacBook Pro later 2008 (already had Mavericks), and just when it said 1 minute to finish install, it completely turned off and will not turn back on and is completely unresponsive. I get no chime, no sleep light, not keyboard lights, no fans come on or even the screen. The magsafe adaptor is working fine on my own macbook and his, and the battery on his MacBook Pro works ok too. I have tried resetting the SMC, but it still will not turn in, with or without the battery and with or without the magsafe adaptor (all combination, except obviously no battery and no magsafe).

To begin with I though the battery had run out at the end of installation even though it was connected to mains, but I had switched the extension lead off without realising, but I think it turns out it's either to do with Mavericks, or that someone the power button is no longer responsive. Any clues?

thank you

DeeCusta,

I ended up having to send my Mid-2009 Unibody 17" MacBook Pro back to the manufacturer to have the logic board replaced.

Ultimately it was a long chain of unfortunate events, starting with my HDD. Apparently even thought it seemingly worked fine for a few years, it was slowly racking up read/write errors, causing the processor to get bogged down. Then video performance began to suffer. Then my fan started running constantly, and the case was extremely hot to the touch. Also, I left the battery charging too long, too often, and killed that too. It's important to note that I was using a 3rd-party external monitor most of the time, which is apparently linked to kernel panics (due to the resolution settings confusing the computer and it freaking out).

All-in-all the kernel panic is what shuts down your Macbook sporadically, and can be linked to tons of different things. After a bunch of kernel panics over a month or two, it seems that everything led back to the brain and fried the logic board.

So, long story short, bring your computer to the Apple store (I know, I know) and have them run a hardware diagnosis on it. They will find it's not repairable in-store and will mail it out for a new board.

Hope this helps.

Sean,

It's good to know what has happened to your macbook, the battery on this one has been damaged due to overcharging by the previous owner, so i was hoping maby a new battery will solve the issue.

I am hoping it's not the motherboard, but I wonder if the power button has become unresponsive or has died/failed. Would you happen to know how to turn a macbook on where the power button is not working?

Thanks.
