ipod touch is totally locked out and will not accept pass code?

My sons ipod touch will not open with his pass code ? It locked out completely and would not even ask for password. It said connect to itunes for help.

I did this and managed to get up the password page on the ipod touch but still will not accept his code and continues to time out further each time we try.....

I am doing a full reset now..... it did part of it then came up with 1 download to go and 12 hrs to go. Seems a bit long.... it now has after 3 or more hrs telling me 3 hrs to go. Was this the right thing to do?
