Nano incompatability with operating system

I have just bought a nano, got home to find out that I a)didn't have the latest version of Itunes b)when I downloaded the latest version of itunes couldn't open it because I have OSX 10.5.8. what system should I put on Leopard or Lion, I have a MacBook P
