Can´t install OSX on my G4 quicksilver 733!!!

Hi.

I have a G4 quicksilver 733 with the standard 128Mb RAM, 40Gb HD, cd-rw.

I used to have 9.2.2 and 10.1.5 installed and running.

The OSX stoped to work some time ago (>12 months), but I needed only the Classic...

I´m trying to install the OSX (on a new HD) again with no luck.

I have 10.1 retail CD and 10.4 retal cds.

The 10.1 installs ok, but only boots on safe mode (holding down shift). The normal boot show me a gray screen.

The 10.4 install cd can´t boot at all. I can select the cd to boot (holding option) and boot halts on a blue screen.

What I´m doing wrong???

Thanks.

PowerMac, Mac OS 9.2.x, QuickSilver 733

Have you used your OS X CD to access the Disk Utility app on the disk so you can format the new drive as a Mac OS HFS+ extended format (journaled)?

Also, if you have OS X 10.4 Tiger on disc, first off the install disc is, probably, a DVD install disc.

Do you know if your Mac's disc drive can read DVDs or is it just a CD reader/writer.

Second, in order for OS X 10.4 Tiger to install, you need a minimum of 256 MBs of RAM.

Currently, your Mac only has 128 MBs of RAM installed and maybe the installed is halting installation because of this.

Humm.

No luck buying memory here on Brazil.

I got 2 modules from Samsung 512mb (pcm375 012213 51mb pc133 sam B6947RA), but did not work.

The module has 16 chips (k4s560432) (8 each side of the module).

This is the requirement:

Random-Access Memory (RAM)

- Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM) up to a maximum of 1536 MB (1.5 GB)

- All SDRAM is supplied in removable Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs).

- Three slots are available for DIMMs that are

-“PC-133” SDRAM DIMMs

-128, 256, or 512 MB DIMMs

256 MB DIMMs must have 128 or 256 megabit (Mbit) technology devices; 512 MB DIMMs

must have 256 Mbit technology devices.

m 3.3 volt ( V ) unbuffered, 64-bit wide, 168-pin

What is wrong?

Before I rule out that it is the wrong RAM, make sure the modules are fully seated in their RAM slots firmly.

Obviously, I am not from Brazil.

Is there a specific reason why you cannot order, purchase and have shipped the correct and proper spec'd Mac RAM from the sources I specified?

These sources guarantee their RAM is 100% compatible with Macs.

I believe both Crucial memory and OWC have international shipping.

Here's a link from both sites what RAM your PowerMac needs and works.

OWC's site has full spec descriptions of their RAM for comparison to what you obtained.

Hi!

Finally I get time to try to put this mac to work.

I get 2x512mb ram sticks on OWC. Now the mac can boot on OSX... 🙂

But isn´t ok... 😟

I got lots of graphical problems, safari close because of errors, xcode instalation crash...

The hardware test CD pass ok without problems...

Now I can´t boot on 10.4 again. I get blue screen of kernel panic. The same after re-install...

I will try to change the OSX drive to master and try again.

Maybe my mac can´t run 10.4... 😟

I need a Mac version that:

1. Run com quicksilver 733 with 1gb ram

2. Can build/run x3270 (need xcode tools)

3. Can run a web browser with java suport (ex: safari)

Any other idea?

Thanks.

Hi Sergio,

Another thing I forgot to ask now that you are having issues, you mentioned that this Mac stopped working some months,,ago,

Has the Mac been off of electrical power all that time?

If it has, another problem could be that the half-height AA size rechargable lithium PRAM battery is dead.

These batteries only last five or six years and they need a trickle charge from a powered up Mac to keep them alive for that long. Without electrical power to this battery, they die in a matter of days or a couple of weeks.

You can get one of these batteries from Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com), but if you know a source you can get this from, yourself, that would be good..

Here's the OWC link for the battery.

Sorry I forgot to ask about the battery. I assumed this was a Mac you had been using.
