Pages 09, table of contents and table question

I'm using tables to layout recipes in a book form. I am trying to setup a table of contents to use the recipe names (set as heading 1) but since they are located in a table Pages 09 seems to be ignoring them. If I set something as heading 1 outside the tables then pages formats my table of contents just fine. Is there any way of getting pages to recognize my heading 1 setting within the tables to form the table of contents.

Alternately is there another tool in pages that provides the same flexibility that tables provide that will allow me to include such headings? I am hoping to migrate 100s of recipes from word to pages. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx

No, there isn't. The TOC only recognize the headings in the text layer in a word processing document.

Yes, they are all currently word documents. Doing things differently I am ok with, not being able to properly layout a document because pages can't access items with the for their TOC I am not ok with. Seems to be a pretty silly oversight on Apples part.

If pages can't do some basic functions that I need over and over and over again....that is an obstacle. Having the TOC read a Heading 1 within a table is a pretty simple task, and has been widely supported for over 10 years in PC word. Tables are a very common and widely used layout tool, and should have their use limited by something as silly as not being able to include info in a TOC. Silly oversight on Apples part. If there was another tool that allowed the flexabilty of tables I would use it, but thus far I have not come across one.

What I am saying is if you want to use Pages learn how you can use it without using tables for you text. There are other ways to do it using the built in features for a word processing document. It might not be as basic to use headers from tables as you think.

Instead of repeating how bad it is that Pages doesn't work as you want it to either learn how it works or pick another application that do what you want. You can buy MS Office for Macs too.

I have recipes templates and never use tables. That is just one of those things that PC users do and why I can look at their work and pick it for what it is.

Not that PC users have to use tables for their layout any more than I do, it just is their first weapon of choice not knowing or understanding how to really layout text, pick fonts or style.
