iPhoto will not open photo for editing

My MacMini HD was getting dangerously full so I moved my entire iPhoto library over to my MiniStack external drive. Since doing so, I am able to display mulitiple photographs within their folders, but if I click on an individual image to open for editing, a plain black screen opens with no photo. Same thing occurs if I select 'slideshow'. This is very worrying. Advice please!

I'm screwed. I can no longer open either copy of my iPhoto library. This is what I get:

"You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."

I didn't make any changes. This morning I tried to open a photograph, to make sure that feature was no longer working. I then made a second copy of the library and tried to rebuild.

Now nothing works. Does this mean I have lost 10 years of photographs?!?!?!?

I downloaded the Manager and it opened my library - but with only 102 photographs. I had thousands of them. Something is seriously wrong and I will have to have my computer serviced. They say it's possible to make a full recovery, but they do not guarantee it.

All because I made a few changes to my library before rebuilding!!!

Try this:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

1. Open the library package like this.

User uploaded file

2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.

User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Thought I should give you an update, Larry. I was not able to use Time Machine to restore the library because I got a message I did not have permission. I subsequently bit the bullet and took my Mac and external drive in for servicing. I don't know how they got around the permissions issue, but they were successful. All is now well.

I appreciated all your help. Thank you.
