Siri has lost her mind on voice to text

In the last two-three days, when I try to do voice to text, Siri goes nutso. If the text is too long, she goes off on a tangent about how long my "question" is and can I ask it in a more simple fashion? This doesn't happen if the text is brief. This is a recent problem - prior to this, I could dictate very long texts, and other than a few problems in translation, Siri had no problem with it. Anyone else experiencing this?

I am having the same problem. Has anyone found a soluiton? it seems like a short text is okay but anything long is prompting SIRI to spout off some Hawkeye crap or Mozart quotes. I called APPLE and they told me to rest the settings with SIRI off but it does not work. Has anyone gone into an Apple store to see if they can help? I use SIRI constnatly and this is a real drag.

There is no solution other than Apple adjusting whatever setting was changed about a week ago.

I think that everyone is affected worldwide. Probably, many of them either don't use Siri for messages of more than half a dozen words OR don't know where/how to complain

I think Applecare support staff are uninformed and any advice they offer is simply a waste of time.

Everyone should be sure to leave feedback about this problem (http://www.apple.com/feedback) This is almost certainly a bug, though I can't tell whether it's a Siri bug or an iOS bug. One thing is for sure, the text is being fully transcribed and sent to the iPhone before Siri responds with her rather condescending spiel about asking too long of a "question." This can be easily checked by simply scrolling up in the Siri "window" (I don't know what else to call it) on your iPhone after receiving one of these responses to see your entire message fully and accurately transcribed. Why Siri is refusing to take that text and put it in a text message like you've asked is anyone's guess since she's clearly doing the same amount of work turning speech into text as she's been doing since her initial release. Feedback is the best way to make sure that Apple knows this is happening and that people are unhappy about it.

I just spoke with Apple. Once the advisor understood what was happening, he put me on hold. Then he came back and said this appears to be a system-wide issue. "A coworker and I just tried it and the same thing happened on both our phones." I'm scheduled for a follow-up call in two days.

This is not the first time that I've wasted my time making sure there was nothing wrong with my phone and Apple advisors NOT being aware of a problem that has obviously been reported by multiple people. I think this is the third time I've rebuilt my phone to follow their silly protocol, only to discover that it was their issue. The last time something like this happened, I was on the phone for hours with an Apple employee. He said numerous times that he wasn't finding that particular issue being reported. Finally, it was posted in their system that there was a known issue, with a time-stamp about 12 hours earlier, but was only then being posted. He was very upset. If the call were monitored, he might have gotten written up for what he said. I made sure to write a strongly-worded submission to Apple criticizing them for this screw up and commending the advisor (by name) for his patience.

Steve Jobs, you are sorely missed.

Note to whomever might be reading this -- it's not limited to iMessage. I've had Siri "take a tone" with me for adding a long meeting to my calendar. This, too, just started happening in the past week or so.

Very annoying. I use Siri all the time for hands-free driving. If they're going to restrict the length of discussions with her, it should be advertised.

I, too, started having this problem about 2 weeks ago. I had sent a text to my son & had added double !! To the end of the 1 sentence text. I thought maybe I "over-punctuated" but I send out long texts all the time with plenty of punctuation. So I re-texted & got this long Mozart quote, then another long quote, then quippy responses...until I was cursing at Siri...I rely on Siri to text almost entirely as I can text while driving to & from work, etc. especially on long drives a lot can be accomplished. This has crippled my texting abilities.

I brought my phone into my local Apple store 3 times within a week for this problem. As I was approaching the end of my warranty, I wanted this taken care of. None of the employees/support specialists had seen this problem before. I had actually taken screenshots of the numerous responses so they would believe me. After a factory reset & some sort of complete stripping of the whole phone on the second visit (HUGE pain to reconfigure everything even though I backed up on my Mac), they decided it was a problem with the phone itself & promptly gave me a new one. Much to my dismay, it did NOT solve the problem. I had googled about this issue previously, but just found this thread today. At least I now know this problem really exists among other users!

How come the Apple store support staff are unaware of this problem? It seems like something that may have been important for them to know. It was one of the managers who insisted I receive a new phone right away. You'd think he would be aware of such a problem, but apparently not. Why is Apple trying to hide this? BAD customer service.

Condescending responses to long dictations instead of processing them and sending the iMessage. Really?

I'd love to know who at Apple thought this would be a good idea. Insulting (and frustrating) your customers isn't something Apple is known for. Whoever made the decision to mock the customer should be tossed from the Siri team.

I understand the need to limit the length of queries but if they can't differentiate between a query and dictation for an iMessage, or deliberately hobbled the ability to send replies to iMessages via Bluetooth, that's really sad. Maybe we're spoiled because Apple has a reputation for excellent service and quality, but this doesn't meet that mark at all. I provided feedback via the Apple website, for all the good it will do.

It's interesting that there are relatively few comments here on this issue, given that it's obviously system wide. I posted it on Facebook and asked all of my friends to try to send me a long text or emailI and all who replied said they got the same thing. But then there was lots of, "I've never used her that way before" comments, which surprised me. Maybe there are just a few of us who take full advantage of Siri's capabilities. You would think that Apple employees would be doing so, however, and they would be the first to notice and address it.

I was optimistic after I spoke to them and they agreed that it's a system-wide problem, but nothing has been done yet. And that call-back that I got started with, "How can I help you today?" I told them the problem should be there, fully-reported.

"So you're having trouble with Siri?"

Sigh. I told her I was told it was a sytsem-wide issue and asked if there were any updates. She said, "Oh, if it's a system-wide issue that you've reported, they will let you know when it's fixed." Really? All of us? Somehow I don't believe it. And how two Apple employees can replicate this problem on their own phones and not send it up to the ranks pretty quickly, I just don't get.

And I agree with asfdj -- my initial reaction to this was how freaking insulting and condescending this was. It's exactly how I put it in my complaint to them. If you have not complained, go to the address posted by JapookiRuin above. Advisors always SAY that those comments are taken seriously, but I don't know. It doesn't hurt, though.

Reiterating, as a blind user this is actually sickening. I've sent two formal complaints to Apple. I mentioned I believe this could be an actual ADA suit if they aren't careful. I also mentioned that I've been testing the phone for it's utility for our Washington State University students with special needs for whom Siri voice to text could be a window into a whole new world of accessibility. I report directly to the president of the university and the vice president of Information Technologies my findings. I told Apple that this issue is significant enough that WSU won't be purchasing Iphones for it's special needs students unless and until this issue is resolved. It's a shame it may come to that. Additionally the abrasive condecending retort Siri provides frankly is salt on the wound. I encourage all of you not to quit sending formal complaints regardless of the apparent futility thus far. As a licensed psychologist, I fear Siri's control issues have become intolerable and this is the only therapy I can prescribe to remedy the situation. Thanks.

@hexonxonx - Fair points, however:

1) You can dictate long texts as much as you want using the mic button on the keyboard (which uses the same text-to-speech engine used by Siri).

2) The transcription is still happening, since Siri will display what you said right before launching into a "witty" reply about how you should be more brief. It's being transcribed anyway, so why not just send the message?

2) I still maintain that the approach used of lecturing the user isn't polite, funny or good for business.

Honestly, I think the limits were supposed to apply to questions for Siri, not to dictation of an iMessage.

I wouldn't be surprised if that gets fixed. Hopefully they'll drop the long-winded responses to questions at the same time though. Nobody wants to hear that when they're driving down the road.

Hallelujah! As of today, siri's condescending comments about long texts are absent. I have been dictating extremely long texts, and even Facebook posts for the last few hours, with no response from Siri other than to do what I asked her to do in the first place and send my text or post to Facebook. It looks like Apple listened to all of us, and actually fixed the issue. Thank goodness!!

Are you seeing the same thing? Let me know. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Apple will listen to other issues like they listened to this one.

Dictated by Siri...
