Iphone 5 charger keeps on breaking.

Over the past five months, I have purchased over five different charger cables for my iphone 5 which i bought new in December. For some reason, after months, weeks or even days, he latest charger stops working. Sometimes the phone is plugged in and it doesn't respond at all to the cable, other times, the cable only functions when in a certain position. I am so angry at this as I'm spending and will continue to spend a lot of money to charge my phone. Am I doing something wrong? (This was never an issue with my iphone 3 and the cable even worked when the connector head seemed half broken off). What should I do? And also, is anyone else having this issue, because if not, then it must be an issue with my actual phone, no?

Thanks

iPhone 5

i have bought too many cords that cost way to much that don't last at all and everyone i know has this problem. i just get the 10$ ones from the corner store probably just as good and the apple cords and my first one broke today after about a month. and it was at 7% and i'm currently at work so i decided to cut it open i little around the end of it and give the cords a little push upwards and it works just fine luckily maybe you guys will have the same luck and can use your broken cords a little longer. hope this helps guysUser uploaded file

Wrong. This is what happens when an even moderate number of Apple customers have the same problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3391947

You will note over 2 MILLION views, and 13,000 posts before the thread was locked. And even this affected a small number of users - specifically, users who had MS Exchange email accounts and had edited a repeating calendar entry that had no end date. And the problem was fixed in a point release about 6 weeks later.

This thread has 32 posts in a 4 month period. Hardly a "very large number" compared to 100 million users. And many of those posts are from the same people.

Your phone is still in warranty, so get it replaced under warranty. The warranty on a replacement is 90 days or the remainder of the original warranty, whichever is longer. So if cables really fail almost immediately you will be able to get replacements forever.

Yea it's genuine. Bought from reputable stores but I live in nz so it's more expensive http://store.apple.com/nz/product/MD818ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-cable?fnode=45

Makes sense about the previous post, it shows the plug though before the phone is fully charged. So if its not connecting properly then something's not right!

Funny though, reviews for the cable only have 2 stars lol...

My 3rd charger is about to stuff out, it only charges one way instead if both ways like it used to. If its me then I'm at a loss of what I'm doing... I don't pull or yank the cords. The charger stays in the same plug up high away from my children.. My phone is looked after and doesn't get knocked around so should have knocked something in the actual phone. Who knows! It's very frustrating though lol

My wife has had her iPhone 5 since late November (I got mine on release day). So far, she has damaged 3 cables, while all of mine are just fine. I suspect that it has to do with the way that you handle the cables. In her, they all have been damaged the same way, and the 2 I have taken back have been replaced with no problems (I haven't taken the 3rd back yet). My original iPhone 5 sync cable spends most days in my shirt pocket, and is still perfectly fine...

I have noticed that she tends to "hard bend" the cable at the point right where the cable leaves the connector (usually on the iPhone end). If you look at the cable, you can see the insulation bulging a little right below the "sleeve". On one of them, the insulation had even torn exposing the tiny wires inside. I have found that replacing her USB cables for charging with micro USB cables and the Apple micro-USB to Lightning adapters, has lessened the amount of problems she is having because the USB cables have a different "flex design" where the cable enters the connector. My first indication that this was a usage pattern issue was when I watched her plug the charge cable into her iPhone then stuff the iPhone into her coat pocket causing the cable to bend at 90 degrees so the cable could exit the side zipper on her pocket. Another of her cables that has had this problem was the one she uses of overnight charging. She will lay down in bed and read things on her iPhone for 20-30 minutes before going to sleep, and while she is laying there, the cable is usually bent back and the connector is resting on her chest, so once again, she is hard bending the cable right at the connector. It looks to me as though these cables don't handle that very well...

I was responding to the person saying they have purchased an adaptor while their iPhone remains under warranty, and bull ****.

No such problem with the adaptor included with my business iPhone 5, and the same with the adaptor included with my iPhone 4S used for nearly two years now, the same with the adaptor included with my iPhone 4, 3G, and original iPhone. The adaptors included with the original and 3G are 6 and 5 years old and still work.

Sabina, I've had this problem too, it's a nightmare.

Alan Sampson, I take your point, but my phone was provided by my mobile phone company. Naturally, once you don't have a charger, your battery dies, and you're left unable to call your phone provider for help - which is why I bought a replacement cable.

I don't live near an Apple store (I'm not sure if they'd replace for me anyway since I didn't purchase directly from them - they certainly wouldn't help with setup for this reason) so can only go on the weekend, and as I use the phone for work, it's not viable to wait until a weekend to make a 60 mile round trip just to charge my phone.

I bought two new cables at the start of the month (I keep one at home and one at work). I now complain each and every time the cable breaks and ask for a replacement - I'm just waiting for the 3rd replacement for the work one. The home one died this morning. I suspect that taking the cable in and out of the computer weakens it, hence the work one breaking sooner - however, I really do feel that the items should be more durable.

No landline anywhere near you - not with a neighbor or at work, and no one else near you has a cell phone you can borrow?

Yes they would. All warranty claims are handled and controlled by Apple regardless where the iPhone was purchased.

I purchased two additional cables for my iPhone 5. One for my vehicle charger, and one to charge my iPhone 5 at work. No problem with the 3 cables that I use daily.

You suspect wrong unless you are pulling on the cable to remove it instead of grabing the the USB connector to remove the cable from the power adaptor or computer and the same for lightning connector end.

I have this issue too :(

I've had my phone since April and my second cord is about to stuff out.

I took it back to the place I purchased my phone and I was told the wires inside the cord have come loose from being pulled out of the phone by the cord. I had To purchase another cord so I've been careful with this next one keeping he away from my children. And this cord has lasted less than the original one!

The store won't replace it, I have to purchase another one. Not happy :(

I went to the Apple Store in Birmingham UK and a member of staff told me the issue was entirely my fault, I was using it incorrectly! This is plainly wrong, not to say insulting, I have not been yanking the cable out as was suggested.

You only have to look at the proliferation of 1 star reviews in the UK store to see just how disapointed and disgusted most people are with the poor quality of this item. The iPhone 5 may well be the best qulaity product Apple have every built but the cable most certainly is the very worst quality product I have every purchased from Apple, appalling!

I would also add that I have numerious examples of the previous generation 30 pin cables (collected over the years with various devices), all of which are still in perfectly servicable condition. Yet the 3 lightning cables (all Apple original) I have for my iPhone 5 are all showing crumpling and fraying.

To add insult to injury the Genius then had the audacity to advise me not to use the frayed cable as it 'could be dangerous' and suggested I purchase a new one.

I read elsewhere on here of people getting replacements for frayed or damaged lightning cables but this was certainly not the case on my visit

The issue is that the new Lightning sync cable that comes with the iPhone 5 is very brittle. I have returned my original cable after it started working within 1 week of purchase to Best Buy where I purchased my iPhone 5. The new cable that I received again stopped working. The first cable sheathing had a cut in it. The second cable came loose at the adapter. Both cables stay in the same place at all times and is never exposed to anything that would cause these issues.

In my honest opinion the new Apple lightning adapters are Lemons and Apple should pony up and replace all of the bad adapters with a new revision of cables. I am not sure how this got through QA, but I would imagine it has something to do with where these products are being mass produced.

I purchased a new adapter from Brookstone that has a much more sturdy sync cable and power adapter. This new charger has been working like a charm, and in fact is much quicker to charge my phone.

Alan Simpson, I understand the concept of "why buy a new cable if yours is under warranty", but the problem is this. Why keep making trips to the Apple Store to get a new cable when in fact the new cable is just as bad as the cable you have. Who has the time to keep going back to replace cables.. This reminds me of the exploding batteries that Dell had some time ago (much different outcome, but same QA type of issue), and Dell actually had a plan to resolve the issue. It doesn't seem that Apple has any such plan to date, and have caused a lot of people issues with the new phones. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products (I have 2 Macbook Pro's, 2 iphone 4S, 2 Ipads, Apple TV, and 2 iphone 5's) but this is something that needs to be brought to Apples attention.

I am even contemplating reaching out to the Attorney General's office in my state and making a formal complaint. I would advise others who have gone through multiple Apple branded lightning sync cables and charging adaptors.

Iphone 5 charger keeps on breaking.
