thank you!! The hair dryer works and I didn't even do it a full 3 minutes....maybe 1 minute or a little longer. I've had this problem in the past and had to call Apple or Verizon and don't remember what they told me to fix it....I only remember it took a long time and I felt exhausted by the time it was fixed. Thanks for your way better short cut to a solution 🙂

My wife had the same problem with wifi being greyed out and not able to connect no matter what we did... After trying every possible solution, that didn't with, we contacted apple support. They were absolutely no help at all and wanted to charge us $20 for a possible solution or tell us we probably needed a new phone.. What a crock of ****, I found the hair dryer fix details on here and gave it a try... To my amazement it worked perfectly in minutes!! Sure apple doesn't want to tell us that a barbaric dumb hair dryer can fix from what I have researched one of the most common troublesome problems with their "hi tech, smart" phone.. Don't get me wrong I love my iPhone but apple's customer support, other than this site (which wasn't easy to come across), really ***** and just wants you to spend more money. Thank you for the suggestion and thank you stupid hair dryer!

Called Apple Dubai to report on wifi grayling out on my iPhone 4S and they said its the mother board and there nothing they can do about it. The only option they had was to give them mine which 1.5 yrs old and 1,400 dirham which is equiv to around £300 and they would give me a refurbished same specs as mine.

But guess what! The hair dryer saved me £300. So happy that its working and very disappointed with apple. They cud come up with something better and not making me to spend more money on the same phone.

Thanks to all who posted the hair dryer solution.

I have the same problem. I have an Iphone 4S, upgrade to new IOS..

Talked to support and of course they want to charge 199.00 for a piece of hardware that they branded to set everyone for failure. No wonder Apple keeps coming up with NEW PHONES.. because they know that we'll bite.. Not unless they're pulling a RIM move.. down from here... and whats the most irritating thing, I just purchased an IPAD AIR Nov 1st. Aggrrrr... Now I feel more aggravated.... this just s#cks..

Aggrevated...

Cant beleive this works, was a bit sceptical but tried it and have my wifi back!!!!

Absolutely discusting from Apple who were telling me it was a hardware fault that would cost me £140 if i sent it to them for repair!!!!! Good job ive got a hairdryer and a fridge...

While I'm glad it's now working for you, be advised that many people report that 'fix' is only temporary. It's still a hardware issue, and the only permanent solution is device replacement. Also, be advised that now that you've performed an unauthorized service to the device, Apple may refuse to service it with an out-of-warranty option, as they previously did offer.

I hope you're one of the few for whom this is a permanent fix, and that you have no other issues with your device. But you've used a 'jerry-rigged' solution, which is unstable.

Best of luck!

does it last though?

PS: it's really annoying that this issue has been encountered by many thousands of people but Apple is pretending not to listen and refers to it as 'IN RARE CASES' ....

"In rare instances, the setting to turn on Wi-Fi on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may appear "grayed out" or dim. If this occurs, you will not be able to turn Wi-Fi on."

they should change it to 'usually, following a software upgrade, the setting...."

The hair dryer method worked perfectly for me. Left my iPhone 4S on during the process so that I could see the heat warning. Turned it off once the warning popped up. Left it to cool down on a bathroom tile for 30 mins. Turned it back on and it was working. A little too late because I had bought a Galaxy S4 to replace the iPhone 4S. At least now I have the iPhone as a spare.
