Thanks for the suggestion..it worked.

Hold power button and home button togeather at same time for about 7 seconds then let go off home button and keep pressing power.. It should restart!

I dropped it onto a small carpet and then tapped it from about 1 foot high === screen returned, up and running again 🙂

My 6 year old son just came to us with a black iPad - we could hear Siri, but nothing else worked! I searched the support forums and your suggestion came up. I tried iTunes, holding down buttons etc first but when nothing worked I thought I might as well give your idea a go and hey presto! The apple symbol appeared and the iPad now works perfectly again.
