My Mac freezes and only mouse moves

Hello, I have problem with my iMac 20" mid 2007. It randomly freezes once a day and if it freeze I can't do anything if I'm listening to some online radio it keep playing but everything else freeze I can't close apps, minimalize, cmd + shift + esc do not work, only I can do is move with mouse cursor and to get it work I have to do hard reset. I don't know what can cause this but I think it might be Safari. Because of since yesterday I've installed Google Chrome and I do not use Safari and it seems it will not freeze(I hope) and It freezing only if I'm browsing the internet with Safari. Also after the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion shutting down takes about 20 - 30 seconds with Snow Leopard it was about 1 - 2 seconds, so should I reinstall and if so to Lion or Snow Leopard. Because iMac 20" mid 2007 was design for OS X 10.5 and I'm using OS that is 3 versions newer.

Thank you so much in advance.

All help will be appreciated.

I had it happen nearly daily but I think I have found the culprit. In my case the issue only appeared on two Macs (iMac & MBP) that had Evernote installed, and usually when scrolling in Safari, so I suspect Evernote's web clipping feature is at fault. Uninstalled Evernote from the iMac and it hasn't frozen in a week. Installed Evernote again, and it froze within 24 hours. So I removed it again and things work fine.

I really love it when someone gives an easy solution that works.

I really don't love it when I have to wade through several swamps of Stuff to get to something simple that works.

Like "clean and blow out along the edges of your trackpad".

Or in this case, disable Evernote.

I did indeed have Evernote active. How'd that happen? I don't know; never used it.

Quit Evernote and the mouse/trackpads are active again.

Explains why things worked for awhile after restarts and reboots, until Evernote got into the act.

Wish there was a way for simplest solutions to rise to the top! X-ing Evernote worked for me. Best.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hi, thank you all for your helping to me.

iMac 20 inch, mid 2007

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB

OS: Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3

All hardware is original, only Memory was upgraded to 4 GB.

Most of errors I'm getting from Safari

// error below is there maybe 80x times

5/6/13 11:30:04.139 PM Safari[577]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0

// ------------------------------ Conclusion ------------------------------\\

I think my Mac freezes causes Safari because of Mac was freezing frequently. And since I'm using Google Chrome Mac didn't freeze yet.

// Plan A

I'd like to fix this error and use Safari.

// Plan B

Reinstall to Mac OS X Lion 10.7

It will be fresh install and it's working better on the older Macs.

// Older Mac than mine and it looks that it's working perfectly.

My present OS was installed through upgrade from clean install of Snow leopard.

PS. Mac froze everytime only when I was browsing the internet through Safari.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

GPU Debug Info Start

That usually indicates a hardware fault in the graphics subsystem, but might also represent a bug in the drivers.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hi,

I experience often a freeze of my IMac 27 running OS X 10.9. The freeze happens when I'm using safari and only the mouse pointer moves, everything else is freezed. The only solution is to reboot the IMac. I start experiencing this more after 10.9 update.

HELP!!!

Thanks a lot.

Andrea

I've been tracking this issue for a couple of years but have never been able to resolve it, until I stared having problems with Safari. Safari would slow down leaving me waiting for the "beachball from ****" to stop spinning whenever I tried to scroll through a page or enter data on a webpage. So I gave up on Safari and started using Google Chrome as my browser. It's been two months now and my screen has not frozen and surfing the web is now responsive and fast. I don't know what's behind any of this. I only know I haven't had to reboot my Mac since I abandoned Safari for Chrome.

My Mac freezes and only mouse moves
