The display goes black when I am using Skype or making calls

Does anyone know why when I am using Skype my screen goes off and I have to press the home button to bring it back. Even if I get it back, it flashes back off almost straight away. Also when making calls, won't even stay active long enough for me to push the "end call" button. Its very annoying!
