preventing apps from installing when syncing

I have an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5 linked to my account and both backed up on iTunes for Windows. There are two apps which I have installed on the iPhone 4, that I do not want on the iPhone 5.

I set up the iPhone 5 by restoring from the backed up iPhone 4 via iTunes, and then started removing apps I didn't wan't on the 5 by selecting "remove" on the Apps screen. The two apps in questions generated an error during the initial restore process, saying they could not be downloaded. This was fine, as I don't want them on the 5. Problem is, every time I sync iTunes tries to install them again. There is no "remove" option - the buttons in the Apps screen beside these two apps only toggle between "install" and "installing" - how do I convince iTunes I don't want them installed?
