If traveling to Spain with new unlocked ipad and ipad mini can I just buy compatible pay as you go SIM cards with no problems for usage

We are traveling to Spain in one week with new unlocked ipad and ipad mini. Can we just buy compatible pay as you go SIM cards from Movistar ,orange, Vodafone etc providers in Spain for data usage rather than paying much more for international travel data plans from our home country providers. Will they have nano SIM cards or is that too new a technology. Will they have micro SIM cards and will we then be compatible for use on their networks?. Please help!

If the sims are availble for pay as you go in Spain, then yes they will work. They should have the current nano sim since they have actually been in use for a time now and Spain is pretty well up on technology.

Thank you for your help with this Ralph, it is a very much more cost effective way to travel. I would also ask if there is any chance that same nano SIM card would work in my iPhone 5 ( guessing only if it too was unlocked). Thanks again

Guessing right, the iPhone has to be unlocked, unless you have one of the Verizon models as they all have the GSM radio unlocked...the FCC imposed that on them in exchange for a load of bandwidth this past year 🙂

If you have the AT&T or GSM carrier model, some of those carriers will unlock for international use, but not US use until the contract is up. Talk to your carrier and see what the status on that is.

Can't speak for Spain but in UK the sims are not interchangeable between iPhone and iPad

The iPad uses a Data only sim and the iPhone a phone service sim
