Try following the instructions on this page for creating the account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534 e.g. select a free app in the store and click on 'create Apple id' when 'buying' it
doesn't work if you already have an account.
that was not the question...
" how do you create an appleid without entering credit card information "
ÇÇÇ
well, i'm trying to create an account and started to do this online and all was fine without credit card. Then when i wanted to use the account to get updates it says details are missing and i need to add a credit card. So ok, i should have written "doesn't work if you're already halfway through the creation of the appleid". I "have" an appleid, but i can not use it until i have added credit card info, so i don't really consider myself to have created an appleid yet as it is useless without credit card info.
Take a look at the response from mountaingoatgirl in this discussion.
yea, her hack indeed did work. Though i'm appalled such a workaround is needed for such a simple task.
I'm appalled that Apple doesn't make it very clear when initiating the process of creating an Apple ID, that there is a very specific way to create an Apple ID if you do not want to use a credit card. I love Apple products but the way that they keep some of these features "hidden" infuriates me.
I followed these instructions - and it's not a "hack" :
what you write might not be hack (though adding card info just to remove it immediately afterwards is what i would consider a hack). But it is not a solution to my problem since it _requires_ me to use a credit card, even for free updates. mountaingoatgirl on the other hand has a working solution, and it is most definitely a hack.
A hack is a change to the default system files deep within the OS on your computer.
Changing, adding, or deleting credit card information on a website is not a hack.
Neither is the act of changing available options on a website (as suggested by Apple personnel).
when a software is used in a creative way, eg not the way it was intended to be used it is a hack. see eg merriam webster. Clicking redeem music with a code and then not entering a code and not redeeming a song but using the fact that it is possible to proceed anyways and somehow this finalizes the registration is a hack.

Yes, exactly - that is the point:
You're not using software per se: you are using a website and you are using available options to navigate it.
I am done here.
yea, my bad. Of course the program serving me the web pages can not be considered software!
