how can i upgrade bootcamp 4 to 5, when i'm already using windows 8?

It will not let you uninstall Boot Camp 4 because it requires Windows 7 to do so. There realy is no other option but to install Windows 7 and then install Boot Camp 5 and upgrade to Windows 8.

The only part of Boot Camp 4 installed in Windows is "Boot Camp Services" which can be UNINSTALLED through Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

If you can't UNINSTALL "Boot Camp Services" in Windows 8 you may have a corrupted uninstall file.

Windows 8 recognizes uncorrupted Windows 7 uninstall files.

Your recommendation to re-install Windows 7 before you can uninstall "Boot Camp Services" installed using the Windows Support Software from Boot Camp 4 is incorrect.

If you are unable to UNINSTALL "Boot Camp Services" in Windows 8 I suggest you reinstall the Boot Camp 4 Windows Support Software again which should create an uncorrupted UNINSTALL FILE.in Windows.

Next proceed with the UNINSTALL through Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features..

Next Install the Boot Camp 5 Windows Support Software.

The problem in this thread is in our use of the terminology of "Boot Camp 5".

"Boot Camp 5" is the Utility in OSX 10.8.3-10.8.5 which is only used on the Mac side.

"Boot Camp Services" are the drivers and the Boot Camp Control Panel installed in Windows 7/8 by the Apple Windows Support Software which are used on the Windows side.

I personally installed Windows 8 months before Boot Camp 5 was released

jcsmith16456 is richt, i cannot uninstall it either, it requires Windows 7.

Wat date does your file AppleOSSMgr.exe have? Mine is 2-7-2011 (july that is).

Agree.

By downloading and unzipping the above linked file from within Windows, and then running setup.exe the existing Boot Camp Services software should be upgraded automatically without UNINSTALLING anything.

If all else fails use the

Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to uninstall version 4 of the program "Boot Camp Services".

Looks like it's working now, the MS fix it mad me uninstall bootcamp 4 and now bootcamp 5 seems to be installing.

Can anyone specify the steps for me on how exactly to upgrade my bootcamp partition from version 4 to 5? I barely understand what bootcamp is besides being some drivers that let Windows run in a partition on a Mac OSX drive.

I currently have bootcamp 4 running windows 8. I have some driver issues with the trackpad scolling weird and right clicking not working, etc. But it worked good enough before bootcamp 5 existed. Now that it does exist though, I would like to update my bootcamp 4 partition to bootcamp 5. Ideally I'd do this without having to reinstall Windows and it's apps from the original disk. But I only want to do this if this is known to be possible for sure. If not I do not want to risk screwing up my mac just to save a few hours of windows installing.

I remember a year ago when I tried resizing my bootcamp partition from within Windows it deleted a 'GUID table' which left my Mac partition useless. Luckily I was able to save my Mac data by running my windows partition. I then had to reinstall Mac OSX, bootcamp, and then Win8 again. I do not want to repeat anything like that again.

Any advice?

There are no partition changes resulting from updating the Windows drivers. They are not connected.

In Windows, download the Boot Camp drivers, run the setup file.

boot camp is 3 things

1

a bootloader it's a thin simple program which decide if osx or windows is loaded this don't change

a setup program this is a program under osx where you start the whole bootcamp process when one has done that one don't really need to worry about that program anymore

a zip file with apple verified drivers you can download it from apples website

this is where version 5 really comes to play because with bootcamp one should use apple drivers or one often get problems and when a new version of windows is released using the older apple drivers can also give problems

so the answer to updating to bootcamp 5 or 5.1 is just downloading a zip file in windows (or osx) and installing the setup.exe if that gives problems one has to install each driver manually they are all also exe files and should be run inside windows

You can download it using OSX but you can not install it that way.

Wow!! Yes it was way simpler than I realized. I followed your link, clicked around a bit for the most updated Bootcamp download that corresponded to my version of Windows 8.1 that matched my 2010 MacBookPro, downloaded it, unzipped it, installed.exe, and done. Bootcamp updated from 4 to version 5.

Apple phone service advised that wasn't possible. So I'm glad I asked you guys!

Obviously it's worth clicking around though to ensure the download is the most recent bootcamp version, is for the most recent version of Windows you are trying to run, and is intended for your specific Mac.
