15" MBPr (2012) getting Geekbench Score of 6500, Should be 10,000. HELP!?

Hi,

I always felt that my MBPr was under performing, and after about 10 months of it, I got fed up and started running benchmark tests... GB2 put this machine at <7,000 while other machines with the exact same spects are getting 11,000+. Could somebody please point in the right direction to get this corrected? I'm ready to run any tests or programs you guys recommond. Please help, as I have only 1 month left of warranty, and if this machine really is faulty, I'd like to get it fixed by then.

Thanks.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

I suspect most such tests are run on computers in factory new condition with all extraneous software turned off, not computers set up for everyday use with a variety of software, both Apple's and the user's, running in the background. Try opening Activity Monitor and check to see what active processes are running when you're not doing anything. For example, Spotlight and Time Machine can keep the computer quite busy all by themselves.

Quit every program you have running and run Geekbench again. As Geekbench's dialog box states, "Geekbench works best when it's the only application running". This is easier said than done since many required system processes are always running, but Geekbench should indicate results similar to similarly configured Macs.

If you still experience unexpected results consider the following:

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:

User uploaded file

Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".

EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

Run a Hardware Test, mention the result if any and tell us how full your boot drive is. If it's a SSD or not.

What version of OS X are you running? Also TimeMachine and other background processes/at boot kext files/ anti-malware need to be uninstalled when running a GeekBench test. You only want the native OS running.

You need to list all your third party and Apple Software, some install a at boot kext file and are actually running in the background.

Paste this into Terminal and press enter, any showing needs to be uninstalled before running benchmark tests.

kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '

Have you tried Cinebench and XBench?, what are your details of that so we can narrow down what the bottleneck is.

Ok, you have this software installed at boot which needs to be uninstalled while running benchmark tests

Kernel Extensions:

com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver Version: 1.0.0

com.github.osxfuse.filesystems.osxfusefs Version: 2.4.2

Also you have Google software installed, which installs always on root level auto-updater.

I have the uninstaller link for Chrome and the root kit and that's all

Uninstall Chrome: https://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95319

Google root level auto-updater: to uninstall that (provided you have no Google software on the machine)

The NTFS-3G (OSXFuse?) is really consuming CPU cycles, it might need a update or be uninstalled. This is your main problem.

mds is Spolight etc., it's ok

fontd is ok, it's a OS X system font process

These need not to be loaded upon boot/login before running a benchmark test.

I see some failed Apple system files, don't know about those, but a #8 Reinstall Just OS X will kick everything out of it and fix the issue if there is one.

Step by Step to fix your Mac

Then run your benchmarks, then you can install your third party software again to slow it back down. 🙂

Also it look like you have BootCamp, which if Windows is in there and you likley installed MacDrive, then it has write ability to the OS X partition, that's not a good thing to do really.

Use a external exFAT USB thumb drive to transfer files between OS X and Windows is much safer and you don't need NTFS-3G running and paying for it's updates.

Hi,

I've done a full format and re-install off of a USB stick. I've only downloaded Geekbench and EtreCheck. I am still getting lousy numbers.

You have the MacBook Pro Retina, 15" Mid 2012 model with the 2.3 Ghz., Intel Core i7 (3615QM)

You certainly are getting some lousy scores, should be at 10,000 not 7,000

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/search?page=1&q=model%3A%22MacBook+Pro +%28Retina%29%22+platform%3A%22Mac%22+processor%3A%22Intel+Core+i7-3615QM%22+fre quency%3A2300+bits%3A32

I assume you had Safari not launched during the latest test.

Have you run a Hardware Test extended overnight?, it might be RAM issue. Memtest?

https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Have you reset the PRAM?

Apple: PRAM reset

Is there a reason why you didn't install 10.8 via Recovery HD to get a new fresh copy?

Did you still have BootCamp installed?

Have you tried using Internet Recovery (Command Option R boot) and wiping the ENTIRE drive, then changing the format to MSDOS/MBR, then back to GUID OS X Extended Journaled and installing Lion, then running GeekBench, then upgrading to 10.8 and then running another Geekbench?

It might be that 10.8 slowed down your machine, and/or because you likely installed MacDrive in Windows, some malware wrote to the hidden EFI, Recovery HD or GUID partition table.

Malicious programs can be installed in EFI and you wouldn't have a clue it's there.

I've run the hardware test (1 hour version) and it came back clean. Ive reset pram and smc. The re-install was a fresh 10.8.3 off a usb stick (a regular reinstall didnt wipe ntfs-3g, etc). The number still looks whack.

Ive always thought my machine was a bit slow and its had a hard time running mkv 720 files full screen via hdmi and netflix full screen hd. Its not my wireless connection, as that at least i know for sure is rock solid.

Called apple, i have an appointment today at 5:30pm pst. Lets see what they have to say. (Was told not to mention benchmarks, just that my machine felt slower than others).

/crosses fingers

(If it makes any difference, i have the LG screen one with a bit of ghosting)

Did you erase the entire drive of all data, including Recovery HD, EFI, BootCamp and Macintosh HD?

Or did you just erase the Macintosh HD?

Or did you just overwrote OS X 10.8 with a new copy leaving your files/programs etc. intact?

Because a "full format" means the entire drive is wiped and formatted anew.

Also if you did any of the above and reinstalled OS X, you have to turn off Spotlight before running a GeekBench because it runs a background process.

If you want to "full format", you should first Carbon Copy Cloner your entire OS X boot parittion to a blank powered external drive, then use Winclone to clone BootCamp to yet another external drive. This way you can restore both later.

Then do the Internet Recovery and wipe the entire drive like I mentioned above and install Lion. (make sure you have accepted Lion for that machine in AppStore) then run a Geekbench, then upgrade to 10.8 and run another Geekbench.

I will bet that solves the issue.

To get everything back, hold the option/alt key down on the OS X 10.8 clone and boot from it, then reverse clone.

Then create BootCamp and clone Windows back on.

Called apple, i have an appointment today at 5:30pm pst. Lets see what they have to say.

Give it a shot, I bet they say nothing is wrong with it or it's a software problem.

When they do, you'll know what to do next. 🙂

BTW, my 10.6.8 Snow Leopard 17" is actually faster than the Geekbench average for my machine. 🙂

So im kinda new to the mac world. Lemme know if i could have done some thing differently.

I saved all relevant info on a removable usb HD. Downloaded 10.8.3 from AppStore. Created a bootable USB stick version of Mountain Lion. Restarted the machine holding down "option" and booted up off the USB stick. I then used "disk utility" and chose "erase" with format option "Mac OS Extended Journaled." Then I went back to utilities and chose option "Reinstall OS X." After setting up the mac/icloud/etc, i shut down, reset smc and pram, then restarted the computer. Ran Geekbench and died a little inside.

(I didnt remove the Bootcamp partition, should I have? The computer was running poorly before it anyway)

delslow wrote:

You didn't need to do this, there is a Recovery HD parititon on the boot drive, all you do is hold Command R while booting the computer and you have Disk Utility to erase and can install Mountain Lion there with your AppleID. It's one bootable partition that can affect others.

However for a full drive wipe, you need Internet Recovery which is based in firmware and downloads Lion (10.7) Recovery HD from Apple's servers directly into RAM, then you can change/repair the entire drive. Then upgrade to 10.8 via AppStore.

delslow wrote:

What was the score after you did this?

Take it to Apple and let them run their tests, then come back and we will go a bit further with it.

Make sure you have some other means to get online here and post.

Looks like your score has improved, almost 10,000 now. Still not the best, I bet Spotlight was indexing in the background.

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/search?page=1&q=model%3A%22MacBook+Pro +%28Retina%29%22+platform%3A%22Mac%22+processor%3A%22Intel+Core+i7-3615QM%22+fre quency%3A2300+bits%3A32

You can turn off Spotlight indexing by "ignoring" your entire HD in System Preferences > Spotlight.. This will stop the background process.

Run another Geekbench test, I bet it will improve the score a little. (make sure Safari etc., is shutdown.)

May 19, 2013 11:32 PM in response to ds store

I took it in and had to convince the genius that something was wrong. They ran basic diagnostics and it came back clean. I insisted that there was a problem so they took it in and they were going to run more thorough tests overnight. I finally got a call later on Sunday and the genious on the line told me that there was a thermal issue and that they were going to fix it (under warranty). They didn't have the part in stock tAi they gave me the option to get my comp back now and wait for the part to come in, or just have them ship the computer to the repair facility (their dime). I chose the latter, and I'll report back when I see it again.

TLDR: there was a problem, they gonna fix it.
