You need to be running OS X Lion (10.7) or later. If you are, go to the Apple menu in the upper left of the screen and click Software Update.
I am not running OS X Lion.
Why OS X Lion and not OS X Mountain Lion?
It's available with Mountain Lion as well, but Mountain Lion won't run on all Macs which support Lion.

emc0508 is running 10.5.8 and won't see any OS updates in Software Update without buying an upgrade.
