Hi,
Message Menu > Preferences > Alerts.
Change the top item (which is a drop down) to the action you want.
Change Sound in the next item down.
You can use the Application sounds, the System Sounds and any sounds in ~/Library/Sounds
These will show up in the list if you have them.
However the Home Folder/Library/Sounds is hidden as the Home folder/Library is hidden
Use the Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Sounds to see what is in there (or place new sounds in there).

thanks I spaced out, I did not think to look at the dropdown.
My mac is making some random noises, and I have a feeling they're coming from the messages app. But I can't find the sounds and alerts preferences within the app. Has it changed since the Mavericks update? How can I play around with the sounds?
Hi Ralph,
We used to be able to get info ( ⌘i ) on a buddy whenthey were selected in the buddy list, and configure specific sound alerts for each user. Has that gone away in 10.9?!?!?
I can't seem to find it....
Hi Erich,
Yes it has.
I take it the item in the iChat community has sorted things though ?

I am trying to add a tone. I wen't to the /Library/Sounds folder and put my sound in there. (its a aiff file). I also have it in the /System/Library/Sounds as an aiff file. It isn't showing up anywhere in the list of sounds. Even after restarting the app.
You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.
Try taking one of the existing sounds and put it in a new folder. Add your file to the Sounds folder (not in the new folder) and rename it the same as the one you put in the folder. Restart the computer and test.
Hi,
The Messages app does not keep sound there any more - or rather it no longer reads that folder.
Starting a new thread will be easier.

Hi,
I looked it up.
You could put an Alias of the ~/Library/Username/Library/Sounds in this folder.
It seems the app now plays .caf files and I have not tested other formats.
