iPod touch discharges very fast in standby mode only if inserted into Apple Universal Dock

I have a problem.

My iPod touch 3rd generation 32 GB (Model Number A1318, no jailbreak, iOS 5.1.1) discharges very fast in standby mode (on, but not used) if it is inserted into Apple Universal Dock (Model Number A1256, Firmware Revision 1.0.2). If it is not inserted into this dock and stays in standby mode self discharge is much less and quite acceptable.

The Universal Dock could not be faulty, as I have the other iPod touch (2nd generation 8 GB; Model Number A1288, no jailbreak, iOS 4.2.1) and it works perfectly when inserted into the same dock.

The battery could not be faulty as well, as it was changed and there were no change. The service also informed me that the iPod looks very well inside and there is any damage at all, so hardware should also be okay.

Notwithstanding I noticed that it usually responds to IR remote if is unused for a few hours, while the good iPod does not respond to IR remote if iPod is idle for a few hours. Maybe this could be the reason, but it seems not always.

I did not tried any software related actions to solve fast discharge.

I use this iPod only with the dock, as it is connected to my stereo, but it seems to be impossible to use it normally. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? It is nearly impossible that newer iPod with new battery and newer iOS discharges faster that the old one.

No, it does not have:

I left the iPod with original Apple charger connected to the iPod but not connected to the mains. This did not discharge the iPod. This should mean the connector does not have short circuit. Also it charges normally.

By the way percentage of the battery level is not indicated correctly, especially at lower level.

Is that always or just when you have the iPod in the "fast un-charging" dock?

If it is always, you should be able to correct the battery measurement electronics by resetting that: this is what a battery "calibration" does (i.e. it does not reset the battery but only the electronics): let the iPod off the charger, until the battery is depleted completely, let it continu for an hour or so even the battery is empty. then put the charger in and let it charge completely and let the charger in for another hour before you go use the iPod. This should reset the measurement gauge.

2. The iPod connected to the charger without the charger connected to the mains should not discharge the iPod: the current can go in from the charger but not out via the charger. The same should be so with the dock.

But this unique combination of your newer iPod and dock does have an unexplainable issue. The only explanation is something with the connctor in the iPod, but that is contradicted by the other actions you take.

I had once an almost unvisible metal dust particle in my iphone connector that was very difficult to remove, I did it with a strong smal brush and a compressed air blower. But in my case it discharged the iPhone faster without explanation also when connected to the charger...

It seems, percentage of the battery level is always not correct (may change suddenly ± ~30 %). I suppose, I already did this procedure that you mentioned a few times not specially and it was no change. It is strange that even changing the battery did not solve incorrect level indication. Notwithstanding this is not so important problem, I can live with this. Fast drain of the battery is the biggest problem, which is not acceptable at all.

Well, O'Neill Control Freak iPod Wireless Remote Control:

also discharges iPod, but slower.

I will try examining the connector carefully with powerful magnifier.

Thank you very much for your ideas, LexSchellings.
