iPod Touch 2G iOS update: long overdue. Help?

I just dug up an IPod Touch 2G, not sure of it's origin. I restored it, and it seems to be working on iOS 2.1.1, but it refuses to update to 4.2.1. I've restored the iPod, gone through all the iTunes troubleshooting tips, and it still won't budge, everytime giving me the (-1) error message that apparently means try again. Anyone have a guess on how to remedy this?

Had the same problem, got a bum steer from Apple shop...buy a new one!

Is there some way to get thing to upgrade... I keep getting a -1 error. Tried a hard reset I believe... held down the power and home button about 10 secs until it rebooted and tried again to upgrade it.... always says error -1 ? Any info is appreciated.... thx

Strange. Have you tried kicking it into recovery mode?

Make sure you have a backup, then turn the ipod off. Then, while holding the home button connect your ipod to the computer. Keep holding the home button until you get the "connect to itunes" image. If for whatever reason you cannot get it restored from there, use TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode.

Thx, that helped me a lot. I tried for hours to update and always had that (-1) error message. This way it worked for me.

The same thing happened to me. My brother gave me his ipod touch 2G to let me daughter play with and I cannot get it to restore and do the software update on my mac. It keeps giving me the (-1) error. I tried to shut it down and hold the home button while connecting to the computer and it still gave me the

same error. I know it work just fine for him, but then again he was using a PC. Maybe I will try restoring on a PC. Any other suggestions? Thank you!

After I waited and said ok to the error it in fact DID restore! Wooohoo! Thank you!
