How do I clear caches and cookies?

Something on my computer is not updating properly and I was told to clear my cache and cookies? How do I do that and should I?

Safari 6

Empty Caches

1. Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

2. Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" and then "Caches".

Right click "com.apple.Safari" and select "Move to Trash"

Clear cookies

Reset Safari.

Click Safari in the menu bar.

From the drop down select "Reset Safari".

Uncheck the boxes next to all items.

Check the box next to "Remove all website data".

Click "Reset".

Best.

What, more specficially occured and what is your machine and operating system version?

The more details you can give, the better we can give advice and tune up your entire machine.

There are many more caches on a Mac that just in the browser, and there are many other factors like permissions issues etc., that might be causing your problems.

If you wish, you can run this neat little program and paste the results here and that will tell us a lot about what's going on with your machine.
