Ruh-roh, Why are Quicktime 1080p trailers are disappearing?

I'm a huge Apple Quicktime Trailer fan from both the website (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/) or the Trailers submenu on iTunes. I was going to download the new Elysium Trailer (in 1080p) via iTunes when I noticed it just offered the Play feature and only in 480p or 720p. So not only do they not offer it in 1080p at all and including even newer trailers like the brand new Man of Steel trailer, but they've eliminated entirely the download feature that's been there since forever.

However older posted trailers by a few days still shows the download option and up to 1080p. UNLESS they have added a new trailer like the Man of Steel Trailer, so now all the previous trailers of Man of Steel are also stream only, 720p max, and no download option.

What is up with that??? Are they going to hold back that great content that has always been available going back to the late nineties? How can they go back to 720p??

There is no evidence that the movie industry was involved in the removal of the downloadable trailers. This is how rumors get started. I speculated on their involvement in an earlier post - it was just that, speculation. There is no way to know for sure unless Apple makes a statement (which probably won't help much even if and when they do).

For the current moment, it is what it is. Rather than continue to speculate, I for one think it would be more productive if this group could collaborate on solid documentation of the "work arounds" to aquire (legacy) 1080p trailers before they disappear as well. I've tried using curl and wget on the command line and both tools only download the 4K pointer. The pointer file then loads the trailer data into the QT container when opened. Not an ideal scenario if you're looking to maintain the trailer for posterity.

If anyone knows of a more straight forward process for aquiring the 1080p trailer, it would be much appreciated if you would share that process (in some detail). Thanks in advance.

With regard to the big picture, it's difficult, if not impossible, to know what Apple's endgame is here without more information.

Giving it some though, downloading preceeded streaming. Once streaming technology was perfected and the average household internet speed increased, something like this scenario was inevitable. Downloading options were probably left in place soley to avoid just this kind of reaction from the minority of Apple's customers; digital packrats with larger-than-average monitors.

OK. That made me chuckle. 🙂

I am definitely a digital packrat.

The problem with the whole streaming and internet application movement though is it's being led by people who live in areas with fiber optic connections and almost no internet downtime. There are still a LOT of people in America, let alone the world, who don't always have an internet connection and definitely not a good one.

I vacation every year at Barkley Lake in Kentucky and there is NO internet connection and maybe an EDGE cell network, if you can maintain a connection. Apple wants us to stream everything, but if my only copy of movies was on the cloud we would be out of luck. Not to mention there isn't a digital version of a movie yet that can stand up to blu-ray quality. Try streaming a 30gig movie and tell me how that plan works.

Our connection at work is pathetic (slow and unreliable) and we have that same EDGE cell network. I can't even email pictures from my phone for work reasons.

I know that's a little off topic, but not much. We had a service that did what we wanted and worked. This wasn't a feature we were asking to add, it was already there. Now, many will not be able to view trailers unless they can find an internet connection that is stable and fast enough to use.

Wow, that is amazing. I also had given up on the issue, but thanks to your observation, I checked and it looks like the 1080p trailer option is back and even the download function Very strange... it looks like everything is back to where it was. EXCEPT not on the Apple.com/trailers page—there everything is still streaming only and only up to 720p. How weird is that?

I've been trying to examine where the dividing line is, like did this happen sometime ago, and the download function is only available moving forward from some point in time, but I can''t find evidence of that. At present my examination of iTunes Trailers is they are all there for download just like before and at 1080p.

Thanks for sharing this. I just downloaded that new Pacific Rim Trailer for my collection.
