iPhoto does not support graphics compositing, sorry. It is a photo editor and digital assets management program, not a graphics editor. You can store photos with alpha channels and transparency (pngs, tiff, psd), but cannot create alpha channels and transparency in iPhoto.

You can set up programs that support this functionality as external editor - Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator, the free GIMP, Graphic converter, to name just a few.
