iMac carry-on with iLugger? Maybe not.
I'll be flying across the country this Saturday, and I hope to take my iMac G5 (17 inch) with me. Two months ago, I purchased an iLugger II case in preparation for my trip because the manufacturer claimed "it is designed to fit under all US-Carrier size limitations for carry-on." (
http://luggerbags.com/faq.htm).
Unfortunately, this claim isn't actually true. I'll be flying United (with a segment on Ted, United's low cost carrier) and United's carry-on guidelines specifically state "Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height) or 45 linear inches (the length, height and width added together)." ( http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1032,00.html). The iLugger dimensions are 6.5" x 19" x 20" ( http://luggerbags.com/iLugger.htm). These dimensions evidently do not include the part where the bottom of the stand protrudes near the top of the bag. Clearly, the iLugger will not fit in a 9" x 14" x 22" bin (although its volume is smaller than that of such a bin). Furthermore, it is half a linear inch above the 45 linear inch maximum.
In addition, while the manufacturer claims "We have had no reports of any being refused" ( http://luggerbags.com/faq.htm) there are reports online of it being refused ( http://www.atpm.com/11.06/ilugger.shtml#24838, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2316706#2316706). The manufacturer's claim may not be false as the reports I cited were not made directly to them, but it is misleading (if not deliberately).
My purpose with this post is two-fold. First, I hope that it will serve as a warning which may save others from arriving at the airport to have their iLugger bags turned away. The iLugger is not carry-on size. Some people may have succeeded at carrying it on, but for many US airlines (not just limited to United), it is larger than the stated maximum.
Second, I'd like to know whether other people have experiences trying to take the iLugger onto United flights (particularly on Boeing 757-200 and/or Airbus A321 aircrafts)? My understanding that it depends on how full a flight is, but I don't think that I'll be able to get hold of this information before arriving at the airport.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Incidentally, I do believe that if I remove the base from my iMac, place this in my checked luggage (along with a screwdriver and hex key to replace it upon reaching my destination) and compress the top of my iLugger, I'll be able to get the dimensions under 9" x 14" x 22". I still need to figure out a way to get the top to stay compressed while I go through security, but this is likely how I will end up taking my iMac aboard. I will report the results back here after my flight.
