Problems Booting From USB

I have a 16gb USB with the Snow Leopard install disk on it. it is all formatted properly with everything done correctly (Checked this like 5 times already, with 2 different USB's). both of these just give me a white screen with the apple logo, I let it sit for about half an hour each time and still nothing.

I also used the mountian lion install and put that on the usb jut to check if it was the install, that booted but i just ended up with the base system screen not the install.

P.S. I need this so i can install snow leopard onto a USB and run it from that USB like a seperate computer so alternitavely if anyone has a way to run the snow leopard installer on mountian lion so i can install it onto the USB that would be even better

Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

I'm not booting from a DMG. I've created bootable USB sticks and bootable external HDDs. Sorry if I confused you, I'm not sure how to express myself more clearly.

Interesting tip to make sure the build is at least 10D2063a. Thanks for that; I hadn't clued in on it. Sounds like my only recourse, in that case, will be to call Apple and pay for the machine-specific system disc to be sent. It appears to be the only way out of the woods. Cheers!

For posterity: I tried a retail 10.7 Lion bootable USB. When booting the mid-2010 MBP i7, I pressed option and the USB was recognized as a bootable volume. Selecting it results in the "No Entry"/Prohibited symbole (a circle with slash). I'm unable to install 10.7 even though it is a later build than required for my laptop.

Resetting SMC doesn't help. Command+R is of no use. Can't get there from here.

Confirming for posterity: Ordering the system recovery disk from Apple with a special build of 10.6.3 (post-retail 10.6.3, but pre-10.6.4) was the only way to install OS X. If you're in the same boat I was in, trust me that I tried it all before throwing in the towel and paying $17 + shipping for the device-specific DVD from Apple.

Thank you to all who helped and responded. Much appreciated, folks!
