Holding down the Home and Sleep buttons will do a forced restart on your device. Just hold them down until you see the Apple logo, then let go, and try turning it on normally once it's sjut off. Or just keep them held down until it shuts off and turns back on again.

After either one, you should be able to keep using your device normally again, but I would recommend force closing any background apps to make sure your device doesn't freeze up again because it ran out of resources. This article shows you a simple way to do that http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137 .

If it keeps freezing up on you (and you always close down all non-essential background apps), or the forced restart did not help, try restoring the device through itunes (after backip up) and setting it up as a new device: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414. If after restoring it it does not work, it most likely is a hardware problem, and I would contact Apple and let them know what troubleshooting you did so you can discuss available repair options.
