How do I know if I have successfully unlocked my iphone and how long until I can use another SIM?

I have just arrived back in the UK from Australia. My contract with Vodafone has been closed in Australia. I tried to put a UK pay as you go SIM in today and my credit instantly went to 0. I realised I hadnt unlocked it therefore have attempted to do this this afternoon. The phone now recognises it as a UK SIM but I cannot receive calls and my credit ran out but Im assumingI wouldnt be able to ring out either. Is there a certain amount of time after unlocking that it takes to be back online again?

Only the carrier to which it is locked can unlock it.

They will send you instructions once the unlock is complete on their end.

Your Vodafone AU Sim will roam on Vodafone UK and other UK networks however YOU will be charged at international roaming rates and that includes the international portion of incoming calls !

As is said it may be better just placing it on eBay Australia and selling -including to cost of DHL/Fedexing back to Oz !

Then walking onto any UK High Street and purchasing a Pay as you Go phone - Plenty of choise for little money available - Look around and the iPhone 3GS and 4 can be had for free. The 4s and 5 will need some cash or there are a multitude of Android phones to choose
